Laundromats are not my favorite places but my washer broke and can’t get a new one right now. So I’m at the laundromat today and dude next to me strikes up a conversation. It leads to me venting a lil bout my job search struggles and such. He’s a nice guy, good listener, and so he tries to make me feel better with, “just know that God gives you only what you can handle.” I look at him and chuckle sarcastically...”Tell that to all the slaves in the world being tortured every day, or the women who are stoned to death for being raped, or the child beaten and thrown away like trash. But yeah actually you make a good point; I got it good...thank you for that reminder. Whether there’s a god or not, I really am one of the lucky ones and should stop complaining.” Me...shutting my complaining mouth and thanking the universe that I’m able to wash my clothes with such convenience and ease.

People who are positive all the time make me a little nervous...ha ha. I don't mean to encourage constant complaining and negativity of course, just wanted to mention that it's normal to feel frustrated and aggravated by life's unexpected events. And that it is helpful to be able to commiserate with somebody else about our problems, big or small.

Most people in western countries have no conception of poverty, fear, and other problems that are part of every day to so many around the world ... and would perhaps enjoy their life more if they understood how little some have and how much they suffer.

He handled it well. He could tell before I responded that I was bout to call bullshit and he lightheartedly said...”I know you don’t wanna hear that right now...” he was alright, thankfully not overly preachy or anything.
I don't know that putting the tortured and stoned on the guy was that good...but I admire your outlook, we have much to be grateful for here

awesome revelation...I have a good friend who kindly reminds me that my problems are first world... it has helped me reframe my annoyances into petty things that I will get over much quicker...

I have Never had a new washer or dryer, exclusively get them from reconditioning places, usually $99 delivered, and they take the old one away. I am 70, almost 71, and would Never pay the outrageous prices for new laundry equipment!

I also buy refurbished washers...I have one that works great and it was about $90...my second one in 40 years !
As a married, working, house owning adult with mouths to feed, I began repairing most of my own equipment. During one repair of a 12 or so year old washer, I removed a broken, hard plastic cog. I went to a little shop that sold repair items and the man told me that cog being plastic usually broke in about 15 years. It was located inside the motor. Once it broke people mostly junked the machines. A metal cog could have kept the machines running 30 years. What does that say?

@Beowulfsfriend I repaired this one too but then it broke again. The first repair cost fifty bucks so I figure it’s not worth trying again since I can get a used one for not much more...
@Sophialyn yep, that is the other thing. Cost versus time and repair. I make a habit of buying cheap cars that run and are safe (tough inspection in PA). A thousand dollar car that lasts a year and costs less than 500 to repair has paud for itself. My lady friend is still not fully onboard - I'm looking at an old mechanically sound Mercedes. Buy it cheap in Chicago and run it there, then take it to Oregan for a road ralley and junk it afterwards.
The only thing I miss about home ownership is tinkering with things and the figuring out how to fix something; not necessarily the actual repair work. Best luck with the machine.
