Read the book "Separate" it gives a great historical view of this time period. But in all fairness, the Republicans were not all that interested in making everyone "equal" many of them were fine with "separate but equal" and the Supreme Court was OK with it. Hard to believe it took until Lyndon Johnson was president to actually get something to stick legally.
