Don’t know why the idea of humans still evolving is such a surprise!

Evolution is always present. It never stops.

Evolution is not only caused by environmental pressure but random faults in DNA which is passed on to children so I cannot see why they are surprised.
There is a faulty gene in my partners family. Not all of them have it but those who have, all have had .cancer of some type and some of them have had children so there is a chance that this faulty gene will be passed on

Some species are evolving because their proximity to humans. Dogs commonly look for traffic, deer in my town look before crossing. Foxes are invading citys. Coyotes know not to attack humans.
My dog seems to know English while some US citizens can't speak it.

The article does not express surprise at human evolution but at the speed with which we appear to evolve. The answer may simply reflect the following factors, among others: environment and environmental change; mankind’s ability to extend life expectancy and fertility through better health care, and, perhaps, the sheer number of individuals involved in the genome and the access each has to others with diverse genomes.

And, while the article does not mention it, there is evidence of evolving species in non-human species. The most common example would be evolutionary change in bacteria and viruses. (Bacteria evolve resistance to drug treatments, for example.) But, other species evolve as well. I occasionally see mention of changes in bird and mammal species. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find links through Google.

Plus, man through his efforts has also contributed to evolutionary change by selective breeding of bigger pigs, cows, chickens, better milk production as well as in attempts to grow hardier plants for food or flowers.

Interesting article—thanks.

It has become very clear that mutations and natural selection alone cannot explain evolution. What we learned in school was wrong. Something mysterious is at play.

Quite agree
