Sometimes strange things happen in nature that make you wonder.
Yesterday I rescued a dragonfly that was stuck in a spider web on my deck, and then placed him in a bush in the backyard. It flew back to me and sat on my shirt for a few moments before flying away. Do you think it was saying thank you?
Beautiful story, 3...... I tend to believe it was thanking you. But whether or not it actually was, it still contributes to your feeling of oneness with the universe....a concept I have been embracing more and more lately.
The anthropomorphic dragonfly.
all living creatures have some degree of reasoning capability - who knows what they 'think'
You know I got an opportunity to get a close look at this dragonfly's face. It looked like a little martian from a sci fi movie. Gorgeous nonetheless. Nature is so fascinating when you take the time to notice it.
@TheoryNumber3 I spend many hours sat outside amongst nature and am always fascinated by what I see, from slugs to wolves, spiders to elephants - they are all beautiful
@ShadowAmicus I think about that a lot. As a small child I used to lay on my stomach on the grass and watch the ants, grasshoppers, worms, so many amazing things hiding in plain sight . As adults, all we see is a lawn that needs to be mowed. Butterflies, fireflies, walking sticks. I don't see any of those anymore. Nature is so much a part of our childhood. We shouldn't lose that as adults.
@TheoryNumber3 sadly we lose the fascination of what nature shows us
Don’t know but you never know. It is kind of Espookie! Kidding. HaHa
I pulled one out of a web on a boat - and place it on the boat rail. Seconds later something t(at resembled a bee grabbed it and ran off with it. Stunned me.
That's really sweet. I am a school bus driver and while doing my pre-trip the other day I saw what looked like a leaf stuck on one of the tires. Then I realized it was a beautiful moth. I managed to get it on my sleeve to put in near greenery. It just would not let go. I had to do my run with the moth on my clothing. It survived and after the run I finally put it near greenery. I don't believe it said thank you to me, but that's okay. I'm just glad our interaction was a positive one.
I'm sure he'll send a card
No I really believe they sense that it's a safe place as someone said ... and while I doubt they feel anything resembling gratitude, I think in some sense they know that something there enabled them to survive.
@TheoryNumber3 deer ticks sense safety and a warm blood meal sucking blood on the back of my elbow
@GreenAtheist ewwww
But you did starve the spider trap making an enemy thereby
Bummer! I didn't really think about that. I just saw a creature suffering and wanted to help. I will not be a spider vigilante in the future
@TheoryNumber3 no you did the right thing let the spiders eat maggots and flies save the pretty big wing aviators
It is not strange for species to navigate by smell among other methods....dragonflies probably do have good feelings reinforce their travel and food sampling decisions
...politeness and gratitude seem symbolic speech messages....bird song is territorial not joyful....I am very proud of your symbiotic decision....I do not know what dragonflies eat or if they pollenate
I pulled one out of the water while kayaking last summer. I laid it on my deck to dry its wings. After a few minutes it flew out over the river to snatch a mosquito out of the air and then flew back and landed on my hand. It ate its catch there and then flew away.
That's a great story! Thank you!
@TheoryNumber3 you're welcome. Always rescue mosquito hunters.
The dragonfly thought your shirt was a flower, or needed to rest before flying away.
Of course. All the wild animals thank me after I help them.
