My union lost our pensions just before I was hired in (that is, those who hired in before me had pensions, all of us new guys from 20 years and less get only a 401k). We were told "The 401k is better than a pension!" Then why do the politicians all have both?
Now we have a program where, unless you opt out each year, 1% more of your paycheck automatically gets diverted to the 401k each November, until eventually it's 15% of your pay. Sounds great to the people who set it up. I imagine they all put 15% into the stock market. My problem is, at my level, I need all of my paycheck for right now. I can barely afford the 3% that my employers make me put in.

I have always said that everyone should have to work at least one shitty service job as a teenager, to learn not to treat service people like they are beneath them.
This is maybe even more true of politicians - they should have to experience some real-life challenges.

They can’t understand our issues, no matter what they say! They simply don’t have the framework to...

I would rather be at the bottom of the lower middle class with clean money, than be a Wal-Mart heir with billions. Because I know how bloody and dirty all their money is, built on decades of suffering and exploitation......
I spent two years bartending while I was going to college. It was hard work, but it taught me to deal with all sorts of people, manage my time, remember a lot of things all at the same time, and most of all, it humbled me because no matter how hard I worked, my income was at the mercy of others....even doing the best job, I was often stiffed out of a tip.
I think when you do labor of any kind, not that I am dissing desk jobs that require more technical/brain stuff, you do appreciate what others have to do for a living. It gave me an insight that I never forgot....
Yeah, I think if Ivanka and most politicians/corporate/inherited wealth people had to get out and do a job many of our citizens are doing day in and day out, they would be better people at least...

Anybody that can successfully bartend can deal well with people in general and would probably be good at anything from sales to social work. Some bartenders, in fact, that work the day shift and deal with all the hardcore drunks that show up as soon as the place opens, are often providing adult day care at the neighborhood dive bars that have such clientele. The bartenders are often helping customers with managing their meds and in the old days, before direct deposit, were cashing the customers' welfare or disability checks.
@TomMcGiverin They also learn about human nature, good and bad and hear all sorts of stories from total love to loss of love...they are counselors to the needy, the hurting, the crazies, the rich, the poor...it should almost be a requirement for people to work in the service industry...
@thinktwice You get no argument from me. It would make them better, more empathetic people. I would not date someone who had never worked in a service industry job, because I would wonder if they were classist or negatively prejudiced against people who do not have high income, high status jobs. Seeing how someone treats wait staff on a date with them usually tells me all I need to know about their class politics and values, so I don't waste time seeing someone that doesn't share my values and political views, which would later cause too much conflict for me to get along with them.
A agree. There is a serious disconnect between those governing and those being governed. The current salary for a US Senator is $174,000. I’ve been managing a factory for almost 30 years and don’t make any where near that!
