It take awhile to know someone. Neighbor I've known for a decade tells me just because I've had rough times doesn't mean there is racism involved.
It just bounced right off of him. He said I am overreacting to the racism I encountered in my life.
He is white, non educated and wealthy.
"It doesn't really occur as much as you think"
"Not everybody is racist"
More "friends" coming to light. Or leaving my sight.

What would he know how much it occurs, it's not like he is coloured.

After I've been approached by a cop on the street to ask what was going on while I was talking to a friend who happens to be black, or saw a local store owner tell that friend's brother we don't serve you people, I'm sure there was no racism. I mean just because the only time I ever got questioned for standing in a well-lit public area early in the evening was when I happened to be with a black man doesn't mean that cop was racist. I'm sure the store owner didn't mean a particular race when he said "you people."

But hey none of this stuff happens to me; so I should be okay with it, right?

One of those people who believes that, since he has also experienced hard times, white privilege doesn’t exist, and that since most people won’t shout racial slurs at you in public, that they aren’t racist.
No, not all problems are caused by racism. It just adds another layer of challenges and worries and complexity. I’m sorry that someone you considereda Friend belittled your experiences.

White, non educated and wealthy. All judgement type characterisation's.
He evidently felt comfortable expressing his veiw. It's an oppurtunity to educate . Was he condescending or conversational.
Marshall your thoughts and engage him. I do agree that not everyone is racist. Some however are or hold racist beliefs and are unaware of it.
Known him in what fashion. If he has a party are you invited? Is it a nod and good morning when you take out the garbage? If you have a party is he invited?.
If he is as you state non-educated then educate ? It is the only cure I know of for ignorance.

That reminded me of my old headmaster where I taught and my kids went to school. He said about one of my son's best friends, a biracial kid, Bodie isn't really black, he lives in a whiter world. I was just WTF. He walks and moves around the same world we all do, and yes he had some advantages going to a private school, but I'm sure he experienced forms of racism. He is all grown up now and the last time I saw him I asked how the Hell he ended up in Texas- he said Austin wasn't too bad.

And biracial is another problem. Not white or black. No community.
I had a therapist ask me "do you identify as white"?
Is that the only choice?

True racists show their colors by their language and deeds.

That is such crap. He can't tell you how to feel or what your experiences have been. That's like a man telling a woman her labor and delivery were not that bad.

Lots of people don't think about structural racism. Many think just using a slur or blatant racism is the only kind.
