The Incas would kill several hundred children at a time when their emperor died. Usually being clubbed to death then thrown into a volcano!
Technically the kid wasn't killed, so there was no murder, intent to murder, probably.. All religions of the past placed little value on life due to dismal life expectancy, human "sacrifices" of children were commonplace and rampant. Poor health, fear and ignorance were the origins of all gods and religions.
Once upon a time, I went to Jerusalem. An odd place for an atheist to be but as I looked around. It was the overwhelming impression that just as in Chicago you are nobody until you have had someone "rubbed out". That in that town, you were nobody until you put a kid on an altar
What?
@kellymkg They all do it. Be it Catholics preventing birth control in 3rd world countries. JWs withholding blood transfusions. Muslims blowing up a concert in Manchester. I can take you to a cave in Scotland where Presbyterians burnt oner 200 Babtist men women and children alive. Of course, it is more powerful if it's your kid but they all have sacrificed children for their beliefs.
Bit of a Bronze Age thing though. The eldest son was always precious and so it’s a demonstration of adherence to the deity.
To view these practices with a C21st lens is an anachronism. Lots of water passed under the bridge since then!
The problem is not the act but that it is not explained as an archaic practice that no longer has validity.
Can you imagine how many of these rituals have taken place, probably in our current time in uneducated or Creationist environments where God’s word is law?
Some will not have been as lucky as Isaac!
Scary thought!
And even worse is the number of people that will praise that whole story as to be the pinnacle of ones belief.
This was one of the things which made me question religion. I remember as a kid thinking to myself, wouldn't god know Christ would have been killed and Abraham would have gone along with his command?
This makes the Judaism, Christianity, and Islamic God a tyrant!
A bloody handed, cruel, inhumane, genocidal, misogynistic, egotistic, psychopathic, homicidal demanding Despot, that is truly what this Invisible, Imaginary God of the Faithfools is in my opinion.
