Monkey see - monkey do. This is some of the nonsense you might find inside certain Evangelical crowds. The other idiots there are following their pastor but everyone thinks god inspired this. It's like when "sister Sue" shouts and yells and runs around the building for most of the service. Everyone thinks god has blessed her.

I think this kind of stuff was the inspiration for a few of the songs David Byrne wrote for his band Talking Heads, where he would wear a pair of nerdy glasses and go into epileptic fits during the songs while performing them live or in the music videos. It was meant to be a variation on the whole holy roller thing of speaking in tongues, which was the name of the album by the band, Speaking In Tongues. Byrne got the idea by listening to a southern preacher on the radio.
