If you don't understand it at this point you never will. Just move to Somalia already.

...I’ve long wondered if some atheists have not developed a ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality, much like those calling themselves “libertarians?” An “I’ve got mine - you get yours” attitude.. Hope not ~

Seems those having commented first are educating you on the subject, good for them. An income tax obviously occurs during your ‘working years,’ assuming that’s the time of life you can best contribute to the society that cares for you at each end.

Problem with this tax is - the filthy rich no longer pay it … so it’s been increased on everyone else. Workers have felt the pinch, don’t like it.. then are told by The Republican’s (or libertarians) that ‘all taxes should be abolished!’ ...so they can quit paying those too. Welcome back Poor Farms!

Vote Democratc, always - and let them begin to adjust the ‘tax burden’ back to those having profited most from the society those taxes support.

Actually the rich probably have very nice bathrooms, so they're not necessarily that filthy. I'm sometimes pretty filthy after a day at work, though (dirt, sweat, other peoples' body fluids...)...

Could we say "the excessively rich" and still get the same ring to it?

@Paul4747 Even their money’s dirty…

Where did you go to school?

The first Federal income tax was in 1861, and it helped finance the Union's victory in the Civil War. There were also huge regressive taxes in the form of tariffs, tolls, and excise taxes, which the poor paid a larger portion of as a share of their income. The income tax as it stands is a progressive system, since the wealthy, who can afford to pay more, in theory do pay more.

There has never been a time when Americans were not paying taxes. The only question is, in what form, and what did we get for the money.

So where would the funding for Roosevelt's "New Deal" have come from if there was no taxation ?.
No one likes paying taxes but they are essential for some semblance of social equality.

There's sales tax, property tax, excise tax ect.

@RobertMartin True, but if income tax was removed the other taxes would have to be raised substantially to provide the same services so people on low incomes would pay a much higher proportion of their income. Fair ?. Not if you have a social conscience

The basic reason is so the rich can get richer and do so without you becoming one of them. Even so, it is best to pay your taxes. Remember the Wesley Snipes experience.
