An email from a guy on a dating site:
"Gwen forgive me for bothering you, you're the first real live Atheist I've had a chance to talk with, i only have this one thing i want to say.. It is written that God's knowledge is silly to the non-believer.. Did something bad happen to you to turn you away from God, because we are made with the knowledge of God built into us.. goodbye and have a nice life.. Thank you.."
My reply:
"Nothing "bad" happened to me to turn me away from "god." I left a church that I had attended for many years and it was a negative leaving, but it was The Bible that caused me to leave Christianity. My study of mythology strengthened this. There is no "built in" knowledge of god; if there were, there were be no atheists or agnostics. If there were, it would be a knowledge of the Judeo/Christian god, but would include Islam, Hinduism, and other pagan religions (which make more sense than does Christianity). Studying The Bible shows that it is a mish-mash of earlier myths and religions. It contradicts itself. The ideas of heaven and hell are based on Greek and earlier myths; in addition, the Christian concept of these places is not in The Hebrew Scriptures (aka The Old Testament) where it is questioned whether they is an afterlife, where is states that the dead know nothing, and where Sheol is located inside the earth. The Jewish idea of the afterlife underwent a change after the Babylonian captivity wherein the Jews were exposed to Zoroastrian beliefs.
Jesus is modeled after the Indian/Persian god Mithras--who later became a Roman god.
I am having a nice life and if "god" exists, that entity is nothing as you and Christian believe it to be."
The assumption and claim that we are born with a knowledge of god is annoying; we are taught about god and religion.
I wonder if he will answer this time.
I don't bother answering such people as even if one is polite, 99% of the time they spew hate in return.
Hell threats and heaven bribes is all they have to spew
Just thinking out loud here...It would've been easier to just ignore his email as opposed to engaging in explanations. That's just me.....
@Gwendolyn2018 Oky doky, I am just saying that the door was already ajar and likely by engaging into that conversation will get the door wide open, which I would like to think, it's exactly what the sender wants to begin with.
@Gwendolyn2018 Understood. Happy Labor day !!!
Sounds like he was giving up on his first message and just thought he'd take a stab at getting you back in the fold..I vote he doesnt reply
like his message was lead by the spirit of god and now he feels victorious for taking heed and now got god on his side is all that matters and your response to him would be from the devil itself he'll say hallelujah, praise god, the devil can sense god's presence but god is all powerful, damn you satan
This guy has lived such an insular life that he has never met an atheist? Maybe, but I doubt it. What I think he meant by that was that no reasonable, thinking person would consider not believing in a creator god. Clearly, he didn't expect to convert you or otherwise improve your life. A lot of what people say to others is really meant for themselves--to bolster their own positions and defenses. And yes, I realize that is true of a lot that I say as well.
A very good reply but unfortunately a big waste of time because these sick minds will never be convinced with facts or evidence.
thats one mad ass reply . i hope he will read and understand
@Gwendolyn2018 my Jehovah's witness mother told me I think I'm wiser than god ! That's why I question " the Truth" Lol
Reality, including the awareness of the history that can be proved, is always denigrated by those who don't know jack.
@Gwendolyn2018 . . .Thank you. Made me laugh.
If you're ever in London, UK, be sure to visit the ancient Roman Temple of Mithras. It is free and quite well put together. You walk above the ruins (2 floors underground) on a raised walkway and the walls of the temple are reconstructed with light to give you a sense of the structure.
People like him think we all have a "god shaped hole in the middle of our hearts." The whole idea is stupid but it make some believers cry. I used to know a church couple that sang a song that said "if just a cup of water is all I give you, then a cup of water is all I demand." It made them both cry every time they sang it. No, I'm not making this up.
There seem to be churches & evangelical peeps using dating sites to bash or humiliate nonn-believers, if cannot convert them. I liked you response, and this thread has been interesting reading.
@Gwendolyn2018 I’ve decided same. It’s quite amusing, « will consider making an exception »! I’ve tried this year, but It’s just not a good match dating a Christian fella.
The one thing that really does annoy me with these religious types is the belief that theirs is the only true religion. I strongly believe there is but one God. However there are many paths to Him. There are no wrong paths nor are there ant right paths, just different. People must be allowed to follow whichever path suits them. Also I do not need to enter a building to talk with my God and mouth meaningless platitudes so that He will forgive my sins. The Bible is a collection of fictional stories that has no place in todays society.
I strongly believe that we should stop being tribal and learn to live with each other in peace and harmony
Really enjoyed reading tour response to the troll, who probably follows women around on dating sites to “save them”, too. He is entitled to his beliefs, It’s just so annoying to have to keep answering the same questions. Your wrap up -last paragraphs- are such a healthy response to a person who apparently thinks that the “little lady” hasn’t thought this through. Brava.
@Gwendolyn2018 lol. Yes, I think he thinks that on some level, who can answer that but himself... You just know when someone thinks their parts have special healing powers.... ummm I’m so confused
@Gwendolyn2018 Such similar here, too. I seem to attract Catholic men, or maybe atheists attract them in general..On a deep level. I believe that they can’t help but see working in all for their church as life itself. I have seen seen some Catholic females as trained marriage machines. . Multiple marriages, acquiring property on golf courses. (Really, not kidding...)
Then I start to dwelling upon catholic church training/brainwashing narcissists to bring all wealth to the catholic church by any means possible, through marriage and such, sex is used at top of list, at which point my head explodes. Lol. I’ve become a bit fearful of Catholics in general. I’ve become afraid to be close to any. Sad.
@Gwendolyn2018
Yes, when I was in Episco palian churches with parents, they considered kissing the virgin’s feet sacrilige. Idol worship. But the cross....
Your 2nd post on this subject does not come up
@Gwendolyn2018 YES. Gonna read it now
Interesting exchange. I don't argue with deists any more, just like I don't argue with trumpists - unless I'm just in the mood to argue.
I still can’t believe people believe in the bible. Great answer! We are made with the knowledge of god built into us. How can they believe that?
