This got me thinking, how many people on here support strict gun control? After all it seems that it’s specifically the religious right that always stands as the herald of the pro gun movement. Even some right-wing atheists I know always stand behind the idiot mantras posted on FOX news. Are most people here in consensus or is there more division on this topic than I anticipated?

I support the second amendment but I think it should be altered slightly to "the right to arm bears" Even things up a bit 😉

I remember an article that would allow all the same freedom of gun ownership in America that we currently enjoy (in fact even more with more high caliber and magazine weapons with better firing rate etc) but would require anyone with a firearm of any kind to actively participate in military service (including desk work for those that can’t pass PT tests). This would both serve the “right to bear arms” and the “well regulated militia” clauses of the 2nd amendment.
There was an opinion peace I read about this once as a potential compromise that a hardcore, conservative, atheist coworker of mine claimed wouldn’t work based on requiring military service. I tried quick searching for the article but didn’t see it. Let me know if you really want to see it and I can do some more digging.

Very strict! Shotguns and hunting rifles only.

I am a gun owner, and will not give up my guns. Of course, I am emotionally stable, have no desire to shoot anything alive, and store my guns and ammo separately and locked. I love to shoot, but only clay pigeons, paper targets, or (with my cameras) pictures!

Whoopedoo. you can shoot holes in bits of paper. That's a useful hobby to have.

@Moravian - I'm sorry, would you rather I shoot live targets? It is an interesting hobby, this shooting of holes into paper; I'm merely sharing, I had not expected rudeness...

@Rustee Sorry, but when I read or hear the comment "I am not giving up my guns" it has that effect on me..
This embedded gun culture in the US results in the death of thousands every year through accidents, suicide and homicides and is unique in the first world and as long as ordinary people "like you" accept this as normal it will continue.

@Moravian - as long as "people like me" own guns, there will be no problems. I am a responsible gun owner. It is those who are NOT like me, those who are NOT responsible, that will cause problems.

@Rustee I am sure you are and I would not suggest otherwise. The point I was making is that uniquely in the western world the USA has a gun culture that is accepted by ordinary folk and this results in thousands of deaths each year by accident, suicide and homicide.

An example ;- I visted friends of a friend in Idaho last year and the householder told me that when his children were growing up he had loaded guns in the house because some time previusly a psycopath had come to the town and kidnapped and killed two women so he was taking no chances. The gun culture causes paranoia.
My late brother in law who lived in London had sporting rifles in an approved locked gun cabinet. He was on holiday once and housebreakers forced open his gun cabinet and stole some money and valuables he kept there but left the guns.
Burglers know that people keep valuables in a gun cabinet so no guns are really secure.

Handguns and hunting rifles only; no military shit or high capacity magazines. People have to qualify with a MMPI personality evaluation, be tested and be registered with the local police.

I'm in favor of strict gun laws. The only ones who fear this are the ones who are questionable. I personally haven't owned a gun in about 45 years, but I have no doubt I could pass any tests for owning one. I just can't justify a need for one.

Register guns, ban anything rapid fire, but don't seize anything legal from any sane non-felon.
To some that is strict, to others it is not enough.

The English law seems reasonable.

Can't see the yanks going for the no handguns bit.

@MrBeelzeebubbles This yank does, but you are probably right. For too many years the munitions manufacturers have spread lies about owning a gun for protection.
