What's the most outrageous thing your mother (or other caregiver) routinely gave you for lunch? In my case, at least once a week, my mother prepared homemade Belgian waffles for me, on which she slathered tons of chocolate ice cream. I've been assured by medical professionals that my mother's questionable lunch time practices had nothing to do with the fact that I eventually became a Type I diabetic. Assuming that's truly the case, I'm happy I got to experience such dietary excess for at least a small portion of my life. Oh, and another lunchtime staple in our house were mutton pies (geriatric, ground lamb encased in a buttery crusty shell). Not exactly health food either. That fat content of those pies must have been astronomical! So, what were some of your "questionable" lunches?

when i was 13 & started HS i had to take a bus so my mother gave me .35/day to get something for lunch. i went to a restaurant close by & would have a french cream-filled pastry with a vanilla milkshake.

I don't really remember. I do remember that as we got a bit older we made our own lunches. Lots of chips and baloney and a few tuna salad sandwiches and always fruit.

My mom had several staples. One was something we called "glop". You take tuna salad, egg salad, and cubes of Velveeta, mix them together, and put them into hot dog rolls. Wrap them each in aluminum foil and bake them in the oven - I don't know how long. Heavenly!

We call these Scotch pies here and they are very popular. I had no idea you could get then over there

@Rob48 That's too bad. I believe there is a shop somewhere in NY that sells Scottish "delicacies" but don't know about elsewhere. The best ones here are made by small family run bakers . The ones sold in the supermarkets are not so good..

My mother used to make me butter and sugar sandwiches on Wonder bread!!! No surprise that I became a pescatarian and veggie lover as soon as I turned 18.

@Rob48 Hahha! Maybe Wonder Bread could help you mutate and grow extra appendages, if you're so predisposed. I never made Wonder Bread balls, just scarfed those sandwiches down with ravenous glee.

@Rob48 Did your mom make you butter and sugar sandwiches too? My mother was an only child....so they told her.

Veggies, I always liked veggies... I also like marshmallow fluff and peanut butter....

I’m afraid I’m going to be really boring and say I have no recollections of being given anything weird or really unhealthy to eat by my mother. She was a very sensible Scotswoman who believed in good plain fare, and being a grocer’s daughter, we always had plenty of fresh food. My mother’s motto in life was “moderation in all things”, no excesses, but an elegant sufficiency in food, drink and almost everything else!

What, no Hagis?

@JackPedigo That my dear quite delicious and normal fare for true Scots...nothing bizarre or strange! 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👌

@Marionville I didn't say it was bizarre (but to many non-Scots it is). My 2nd partner was a McRae and her family was from Apple Cross in the NW corner. We made a trip there and I really liked Inverness (too bad Nessie didn't come to greet us). The path of the cattle was unforgettable but there were too many one lane roads. BTW is there a vegan version of Hagis? lol

@JackPedigo I’m really a lowlander or Sassenach, I’ve only been to the highlands a few times. I’m sure there’s a veggie or vegan version of haggis, but it’s unlikely to taste anything like the real thing!

@Marionville Finally, a lowlander. Seems like all the Scots I know claim to be highlanders. My partner was. What I like about this site is the opportunities to look up things I had never thought of before. [macsween.co.uk]

@JackPedigo Macsween are the best haggis makers in Scotland.

@Marionville And it seems they are trying to expand the market. Good for them. Are you going to try one of the vegetarian types?

@JackPedigo if it was put down in front of me...probably. Would I buy one...probably not!

@Marionville I wonder, would you recognize it? Now that impossible foods and beyond meats have become big hits I wonder how close this would be to the real thing?

@JackPedigo I can’t imagine it would taste anything like the real thing. I don’t like any of the vegetarian versions of meat products I’ve tasted in the past.

Ewh to mutton pies lols!
I used to like having cheese and marmite sandwiches, or the sweet variation; cheese and jam. Pretty weird considering I’ve always been allergic to dairy!

My son went a whole year only wanting Cheese and Blackcurrant jam on his sandwiches which I packed into his lunchbox for his lunch at school....he was around eight or nine at that time!

@Marionville Ah, not just my mum and me then 😊

@girlwithsmiles Nope!

@Rob48 I like Heinz tomato ketchup...can’t eat chips (fries) without it!
