So now the Kurds, in a desperate self-preservation move, have joined forces with the Syrian government and the Russians.
If the Russians now shoot down Turkish aircraft, does that constitute an attack on a Nato ally, forcing the USA to respond to its treaty obligations and declare war on Russia?
This is no joke. It's how the first World War was triggered.

Scary. Even reading some responses just adds to the anxieties

AMAZING how everything trump does is EXACTLY what favors Putin.

What in the world makes you think we'd uphold our commitment to NATO? This scenario would be used to get the U.S. out of NATO.

It's Turkey that should be kicked out of NATO. And it should have been done as soon as they announced buying weapons from Russia.

WWI was between heavily armed and highly developed countries. Yes, it escalated and involved a lot of smaller countries. I, for one of many, believe that if we had stayed out of that war things would not have gotten as they had and there would not have been a 2nd war.
Unfortunately, right now NATO is having it's own problems. Our nations seems to not be as active in it as it once was.

The fall out from this will be huge. So disturbing.

Should the Turks suffer casualties from Russians in Syria/Khurdistan, then the NATO articles should not trigger war, as it is Turkey acting alone beyond their national border.
A counter attack forcing the Turks to fight on their own ground should.
As it pans out, it will be up to negotiations by civil servants on both sides as they earn their pay avoiding a world war which neither side can afford to fight. Thus, the Khurds get sold down the river yet again for the 'greater good'.

While it really isn't all that similar to the start of WW1, it certainly is an alarming situation. Not sure what Trump's critics are going on about though, did they think we should stay in Syria (in utter defiance of both US and international law) forever? The Kurds aren't our ally, Turkey is. We never should have gotten involved in this unholy attempt at regime change to begin with.

The Turks were our ally (I was stationed there) but, now under the president leader they are headed toward dictatorship (as are we). Also, it is strongly Moslem and to many Christians they could never be an ally.

Remember we were in Europe/Germany for decades. Sometimes trying to keep the peace avoids a war. The Turk are/were our allies in geography only. For a long time they were afraid of the Soviets on the other side of the Black Sea. Our base was actually there to monitor the soviet space program. We had an emergency plan that when invaded by the Turks we were to destroy all equipment and march to Istanbul. It was a joke but when we protested the invasion of Cyprus it actually happened. Things settle down and we returned. The base is no longer in service and the Turks are making friends with Putin.

Fuck Trump and his whim to pull out US troops last week. He has unleashed a new conflagration which has just added a new layer of conflict to this already beleaguered part of the world. The poor refugees and Kurdish people are the ones who will suffer yet again, and already Islamic State has claimed some bombing amongst all the confusion. The Kurds were holding IS prisoners, some of whom have already managed to escape due to Turkish bombing. This is a very dangerous escalation of hostilities and it has the potential for further wholesale death and destruction. This alliance between the Kurds and Assam & the Russians is forged out of desperation, and we can see that the betrayal they feel by being sacrificed by their hitherto allies the USA must have cut them deeply.

This would have happened with or without our withdrawal, he unleashed nothing. in fact it's Obama that got us into this insane war in the first place, and the horse we backed has lost. Long past time to pull out.

@Druvius. Regardless of whether he should or should not have pulled out US troops...his timing was not right, but I suppose you are too busy living in safety in your bunker far away in the USA to be objective about anything, This decision of Trump’s has nothing to do with Obama and everything to do with Trump and his re-election campaign. The Kurds fought side by side with your troops in the war against IS....it’s not honourable for the USA to use them as pawns to be discarded at a whim after a phone call with the Turkish President. I didn’t think Obama had a very coherent foreign policy either, just by the way. I’m not American and am not partisan when it comes to being critical of both US political parties.

@Druvius and if Bush hadn't invaded Iraq in the first place. Or Churchill drawn national boundaries ignoring sects and tribes. But none served Vladimir Putin until now.

@Switchcraft As a British citizen I’m deeply critical of our foreign incursions and wars too. Britain and France started the whole turmoil in the Middle East by arbitrarily drawing up borders...taking no cognisance of tribal alliances and territories. I damn all of them, but that is history and can’t be changed, what we should be doing now is taking lessons from our mistakes and not repeating them. Trump is a disaster for the whole world, but it’s obvious that his followers think he can do no wrong...I worry that a large number of your countrymen support his every move. Are they really that insular that they don’t care about the countless people who will lose their lives or are left injured or orphaned in Syria by his premature actions in pulling out US troops?

@Marionville yes Americans are. They soak in a bath of "we are the greatest " every day.
