Speaking of spurious correlations, last week my son was doing a "spurious correlation" project for school. I told him that there is a website for that, thinking of Tyler Vigen's website. He said, "yeah, I've already grabbed a chart from PragerU regarding pollution for it." I couldn't help but smile and feel proud.

Thanks for posting. This proves conclusively that all correlations are spurious.

@skado I didn't see such a claim being made or even suggested about all correlations. How do you figure?

@AlPastor
You make my point beautifully, thanks.

skado

You're very welcome. I"m glad I could stoke your imagination for some secret point you've made to yourself.

"Suicide has been associated with tough economic conditions, including unemployment rate. Suicide in the subgroup of college students is very prevalent. In the college population, suicide is the second highest cause of death". So if you're trying to relate suicide to lack of religiosity, you're apparently wrong...

First one: Good! I hope churches go the way of malls and gradually disappear or are repurposed for community use for poor and homeless.

Second one: The youth of today not only face the regular stress of growing into adulthood but the specter of global climate change. Itโ€™s pretty daunting and sad to me and Iโ€™m old. My heart bleeds for them.

There are three churches in my area that have been bought by people and converted. To businesses (machine shop) the other ones a residences. Let's hope the trend continues.

There may be a correlation, but it is doubtful it is a significant, or compelling, factor.

While the rise in suicide has no known definitive cause, it may more likely be economically driven.

Post WW2 the U.S. stood alone as the largest unharmed industrial nation. Following the war, unemployment was low as the 50s gave rise to the baby boomers.

30 years after the war, U.S. begins to feel it's first real competition from Japan. Soon afterwards, OPEC shoves it's dick into the U.S. economic ass.

We live in a generation where children, for the first time in over a 100 years, are expected to not be as well off as their parents.

With this, it would seem likely depression, and subsequently suicide, would rise.

I don't get what has one thing have to do with the other and viceversa.

1

The suicide rate is a direct result of trump, who claimed to be the second coming of god.

3

A lot of those suicides are gender-challenged/confused young people, sadly. Their intolerant environments (a lot driven by religion) make them so unhappy they opt for death. Yet another thing "xians" can take credit for!

Whatโ€™s driving the increase?

@skado they can not only see, on social media, that there are many inclinations out there, but that some families/communities are loving & accepting. But imagine being born with supposed "horrible/sinful/evil" leanings & knowing you will lose evetything if you are honest with your family & community...and how well youngsters cope with even minor problems of acceptance & belonging......

I don't get it. What does one have to do with the other?

Thatโ€™s a fair question. I donโ€™t know.

@skado why did you post it?

@Marcie1974
I had the same question you did.

@skado someone may be trying to make a correlation between a lack of church and an increase in suicide.

@Marcie1974 nasty post trying to say atheists are responsible for teen suicides, methinks......

@AnneWimsey That was the impression that I had.

It baffles me when people posts things, and when asked what it means they shrug their shoulders and say "I don't know". If you don't know, then don't post it.

@kiramea and @AnneWimsey yup....probably just looking for attention

Why an increase in the youth suicide rate? Is it because life is all about selling you something and this is how we determine your worth and value. Maybe we should throw in the ridiculous beliefs of religion that really do not help you in any way. Is it a mystery as to why people do not attend church?

Years ago Charles Fort came up with ideas like"the earth is a farm and we are the crop." It implied an extraterrestrial origin but imagine that you have figured this out today and such activity comes from right here on earth. We are now the product.

With the growth of technology and depression from white house not surprised more are isolated from each other

I donโ€™t think that one trend causes the other, however there could be something more general going on that is causing both the trends.

Whatever it is, there are undoubtably good effects as well as bad. We will adapt and move forward.

good news, bad news

We all need to find jesus apparently. Is that what youโ€™re saying?

What is jesus?

Post offers no link to any relationship between the two statements.

I donโ€™t know of any link. Theyโ€™re just two things that are happening in our world today.
