A question you see pop up on here is, when did you become an atheist, which to me sounds like when did you join the atheist church. My answer is, I have always believed in science. For others, they might have been "raised atheist", or raised to believe in science (god actually does not have to come up in some circumstances). And for many there is a defining moment, a person or conversation, a causal situation or experience of some sort. From the point that the science in my wee mind told me that Santa was nor real, I was a believer in what is real with science as my guide. So, how about the rest of you--born again atheist, raised atheist, drifted into it?

I became an atheist when I realised that all arguments for the existence of any and all gods were irrational. This happened when I was 30 years old.

I knew fully by 2012 because it was the only thing that fit. The more I learned the more religion became a myth. Imagine that you believe in a magic man in the sky and his "book" that explained everything became a reality over 300 years after his death. This is why contemporary writers of his time never mention him at all. It is all made up.

I was raised in the Christian church. Specifically in the Pentecostal denomination. We were taught that God speaks through us in tongues and that any who seek the tongues shall be gifted with this heavenly language. I tried to acquire this knowledge many times. Once the minister told me to just start talking. So I spat out some gibberish. "Umna ma poh kah pah ka shimy ma ka." Hallelujah son you got it!

I felt like an idiot. I can make up syllables all day. That got me thinking, not just about the angelic tongues but our doctrine itself. (The Bible.). I poured through it. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that this doctrine was illogical. That it could not be proven with quantifiable means. I found God to be a repulsive tyrant. It occurred to me that the scriptures were quite wicked by my own standards of morality. (Ever read the tale of the Judge Jephthah?). To me the Bible made no sense from a purely theological point of view. And so then I wondered what is the truth then?

Later I became interested in science and my study of biology confirmed to me that evolution did occur. That the planet likely formed by abiogenesis.

I just turned 32 and I realized that this means I have led half of my life as an atheist/agnostic. And it looks like from here on out, the greater part of my life will be the greater part!

I was the eldest...and the science minded and trained...so my interest in "the church" gradually faded as I got older.

Funny, though; the brothers and sisters are "believers" although not ardent church goers.

Christian ideology was always peripheral due to C of E background, there but not there so to speak.

Always questioned, got interested in occult ideas in early teens which led on to study of music, philosophy and religion, then metaphysics, resulting in a Religious Studies degree later in life.
