freshly minted ex-facebooger:

I just deactivated my Facebook account. it's something I never thought I'd do. I really liked Facebook as an idea, and I'm sad that I have to lose the friends I made on the site, but I think I may have inadvertently taught the ai to bully me.

for the last several months, the service has shown me mostly just repeated instances of things I find traumatic (sometimes for weeks after the original posting) and obsessive, sponsored screeds of horribly spelled christian-themed social abuse (no matter how many times I hid, blocked, reported, and otherwise tried to tell the algorithm not to show me any more of it) and right wing scaremongers (like "buy our thirty gallon bucket of end times slop" people).

I was following plenty of news sources and legitimate things, but the algorithm never shared their posts with me timely. but it was totally able to send me that five thousandth reminder this week that the last guy I found even remotely attractive prefers, essentially, children (he started dating her in september and I still had to scroll past the Facebook generated post about it this morning. again).

if there was some way to petition for an actual person at Facebook to do whatever needs to be done to make the platform stop being so painful for me to use, I'd be happy to go back, but that's just not going to happen.

so I guess I'll start posting more here. I really hope you guys don't decide to hate me. I guess I have a way of teaching people, and now even computer programs, to do that pretty effectively. I wish it wasn't the way it is, but I guess that's just what life is for me.

and if the only response you're having to this is the urge to tell me how everything I'm doing is "wrong," please just block me. it's okay. unlike the social media algorithm, I think you have the right not to have to look at things that upset you.

I just went through and unfollowed a bunch of sites/people. I unfriended some people and basiclly cleaned house. Some were trumpers some were just a-holes, some were just people I didnt really know or talk to anymore. It felt good unloading some dead weight. So i get your move, Hope you find your peace.

I'm still on fb and enjoy it but you have to unfollow negative and judgmental people. It is also full of ads but then again, I got onto this site through an ad. Maybe you could open a new fb profile and start afresh. Enjoy your Agnostic.com life πŸ™‚

Good for you... Congrats.

If you can't stand facebook then you leave. Like in life you find things that upset no matter were you go.

Sorry you had such a bad Facebook experience. I'm still there as an activist and have had bad algorithm experiences but I learned how to deal with them. I have programs to beat most all pop-ups and had to turn off "following" for some I know who support the guy with the fake orange tan and fake hair. The fact that you recognize someone should not mean you are following them. FB wants as much reaction as they can get. I only post likes to memes that support my political beliefs and add words often to cause others to think. This does work because I have seen many of my words and phrases come back to me later through others. This tells me I am doing a good job without doing any town hall type public speaking.

Please post and discuss here. Say anything you like. Understand that I will not start hating you unless you have fake hair and a fake tan. Hate is a strong word. πŸ™‚

Facebook is plain evil. Okay... Atheists don't believe in evil? How about they profit from playing with your emotions and then own everything you post.

I just had to join FB because I am the new HOA President and they have a neighborhood group on FB that I need to monitor. I didn't put all my information on there and I only have 1 picture of me and one of my property... And that's all I ever plan on adding.

FB is NOT a source for news. It is a source for opinion and the bad part is that opinion is culled from data that is generated to make you act. I would have never joined if I didn't need to.

Good for you I get lots of stupid things on FB also but nothing directly aimed at me.

I doubt that you influence people to hate you, sometimes life and those we find in it tend to have uncanny similarities....Much as a run of bad luck. From your text,I discern a thoughtful and introspective lady.

Sure you’ll be alright.

I had a friend from across the Atlantic "clean out" my computer and add and ad blocker. I see nearly no ads, I can still keep in touch with those who are long distance.

Welcome to the forum!

If you have come to expect people problems on social media but consider yourself a nice-enough person, could you be somewhere on the Asperger's Scale?

I mostly enjoy FB. Sure some things come up that don't suit me - but hey - I got the fastest scroll wheel in the West (east, actually) ! I find my connections with friends to be too enjoyable to fold due to unwanted content.

Facebook works pretty ok for me, in terms of news groups (most of my β€œfriends” are jerks)
Happy to follow you here, thoughπŸ™‚
