And they will slowly drain the world of all that is good just for profit.
I read this quote and wanted to become depressed because it resonated with me, deep in my psyche. However, I can only vote against trump, try to recycle in a town that doesn't, drink my wine and feed my musical soul with some Mendelssohn in order to stay balanced. Speaking of wine, I think I have a bottle around here . . . . . . . .
Yep, that's quite a prediction. It's getting harder and harder to tell truth from fiction anymore, no matter how hard we try to be skeptical and think critically, we may end up believing some non-sense simply because we are being tricked into it somehow.
Tricked by installing fear. Then saying, "I'm the only one," and using lying words that sound grand but mean nothing.
He hit that almost like a prophet. We are in that time today for sure. I recall reading this Sagan book when it came out and I was amazed and thrilled. It was marvelous.
I have those same memories . . .
"The Demon Haunted World" should be required reading in high school.
Hey guys, look over there: Tesla came out with a new driverless car!
Psst, sisters. The revolution starts at `dawn
Wow! Utter despair, Mr Sagan. The thing is all of that will change as Global Warming starts to wreak havoc everywhere.
But I did enjoy "Contact".
@OwlInASack But the silly thing is that it will eventually impact those with cash and power
@OwlInASack Not when food production fails and workers rebel or starve. Who will the internal military kill? Global warming will eventually spare no-one. Knowledge of survival will help (I've got that but I'd hope to be dead before the coming crisis).
@OwlInASack I have no doubt that you are correct unless their bodyguards turn against them, But, my point is they still will be facing a future where their comforts of today will gradually diminish. Sadly farming the tundra will take centuries to be viable. The length of growing season up there will be limited.
I opted 40 years ago to try to be self sufficient in not the easiest of locales. I nearly succeeded but still once a year would buy bulk supplies. I still do.
Loved Carl Satan and his 'The Demon Haunted World'. Wish he were still with us. But OTOH, where we find ourselves as a country today may well have driven him mad.
P.S. His book 'The Dragons of Eden' was also excellent
Carl "Satan"? That's not auto-correct, it's big fingers, little keyboard, GRRR!
I agree ---Dragons of Eden---good book--so hard to control our human violence
I've been listening to YouTube videos about John Dewey and his influence on education. The good thing about him was he envisioned a school as a co-operative between teachers and students where the formation of the student as a fully formed adult was the goal. This was to be done through the medium of the students' own aptitudes, be they academic of vocational. The gist of it seems to be that Dewey's teachings were taken on board by the education systems in America and abroad but the goal of forming the individual was lost and education became more the collection of data in memory to regurgitate during the exams.
Imagination, intelligence, fear, and forecasting. What an amazing mind.
I just put this book on my Amazon wish list. Thanks for this.
This is why I think people re selfish for wanting to have children. Why should anyone be created only to experience our nonsense then be expected to sort it out.
Heidegger was right about ‘thrownness’
