Why are the MEDIA JERKS focused on the " Corona" virus- while each and every YEAR ,
700 people die of food poising by eating lettuce in the US ? Way to sensationalize a miniscual health issue and blow it way out of proportion!!!

There is NO comparison. This could kill millions of people easily. Its spread indicates its seriousness.
A virus is not a local issue.

Remember the flu pandemic of 1918 started off small but because of the war it spread. More people died from the flu (50 million) than the war. This was at a time when the global population was only 1.8 billion. This is one in 36 people.

Interesting study: flu's that have attacked humanity in the past/present. You would think that is what we have national and GLOBAL health organizations for....
Thanks

Several members of my mother's family died from that epidemic. Pandemics change human history.

@LucyLoohoo They certainly do. The plagues of Medieval Europe changed the demographic, and the shift away from the feudal land-tied serfdom. Leading to hired workers and artisans, this altered the social structure, making way for the mercantile forces that shape today’s world.

@BBJong It is why but, as this is only a human creation it can't keep up with nature nor our own stupidity.

@LucyLoohoo Sorry to hear that and I wonder how many had their lives changed and don't know it.
Question is, have we learned from this. I seriously doubt it. Also, wonder how many religious zealots thought this was the (another) end of the world??

@JackPedigo like you I don't belittle the past - just like SARS
we f***ing flew around like chickens without heads for 3 weeks / then shoved our collective heads- and since we did NOT learn~ ☆ guess what☆ ~ nature has a perverse sense
of humor .
Thanks

@BBJong The book I just finished "IN God's Name" talks of natural disasters and blaming it on an act of god keeps investors happy and people still feel free to build in unsafe areas. I think it is the same with pandemics. Making god a scapegoat removes our own culpability. The 1918 flu supposedly started in an army camp in Texas and because of the war it spread rapidly. Now we have commerce to help it spread.

This is extremely serious, a Pandemic in the making. It’s one of few news items I’m actually following. Glad they’re on it … and hope it doesn't affect you 😕

This corona is different in the degree of severity of the illness combined with the contagiousness. It is completely new, which means it has the entire immunologically naive human population to work through. I am irritated by the irresponsible journalism around this outbreak as that tends to make people downplay it in their minds. The actual clinical reporting is pretty scary. I am watching this one closely.

That said. I am sick of the freaking shit-contaminated romaine lettuce coming out of Salinas Co, CA! This has happened REPEATEDLY, which speaks poorly to anything being done about it.

...it has the entire immunologically naive human population to work through.” Tragically well put.. So few understand virology, their ability to mutate, virulence, our total lack of immunity and it’s airborne (aerosol) ability to spread.. Of all our fears of war, asteroids, or zombies … this is the stuff I fear the most 😕

@Varn Yep, and given air travel, along with a 14 day incubation period, it was likely already out when the first cases started drawing attention.

@Zster 14 day incubation… last I heard, it’s unusually contagious during that period 😕 I’ve no doubt, even with the engaged media ..China has, and likely continues to suppress the numbers..

It is a clear case of putting the economy and commerce ahead of human lives. Our obfuscater-in-chief is doing the usual BS work (I think he would pass out if he actually told the truth).

I remember the lettuce issue and it is simply large population coupled with profit and using cheap, unskilled labor that often contaminates our food.

80,000 people just in the US died from flu last year and it was not mentioned in the news that I remember.

[statnews.com]

I think humans like to have a NEW dire threat. It’s fun and exciting and shakes us out of our ruts.

80,000! Holy crap! Anti vaxxers?

Yeah / I read BOOKS about Ebola- how much research is
right now at work on things we can STOP. We are scattered
very thin; they ration health care, so this is cloudy like Ebola.
Viruses change; mutate; and go dormant-I don't eat bat meat but if I did🔊I would take precautions!!!!🕵️♂️👩🍳
Thanks

Sadly, I must agree. Possibly this is a component in the success of the ‘reality’ TV genre, as well as being very low budget, high consumer, yield.

Dumb, then dumber seems to be the general trajectory of the West. No wonder China is becoming the prevalent force for C21st

I really don’t think you could call the Coronavirus a minuscule health issue when it has the potential to become a pandemic if it is not contained. Serious as 700 deaths in the USA due to eating dirty lettuce is...it is hardly in the same category of contagion and risk as this new virus. I agree though that when the news hounds get their teeth into something they can sensationalise and make it seem much more threatening to the general public than it actually is.

Indeed. The academic term is ‘moral panic’ and intended to create media interest and sell more copy whether print, electronic or broadcast. See Theodor Adorno’s thoughts on the matter.🤓

Food poisoning is fairly local...viral epidemics spread around the world and can kill millions. That's why.

Like ebola~that's y

I think it might be because of the potential for worldwide catastrophe. If the virus were to kill even one percent that would be a lot of folks. The news is even affecting the stock market.

I agree though that there’s no need to panic. We’ll deal with whatever happens. In the meantime, invest in the funeral business.

Ebola came and went- I don't see the lessons learned(or applied) in the past.
Yep/Thanks

It’s what the media seem to do. Overplay irrelevance to the point of distraction from anything of any import.

I don't discount the message but boy the messenger is a DOPE; having this occurred time +time again; cry "WOLF"
comes to mind

The corona virus is very serious.. It's could spread throughout the world... And it could kill thousands or even millions if it isn't addressed... It's deadlier than the flu... The lettuce problem could be solved easily but I don't know why it isn't....

LIKE EBOLA CAME AND WENT/these folks ate contaminated food ,,,if I travel (get shots) if I cook(prepare & handle carefully) taxes should source research into this or other health THREATS,-if nothing is implemented this scare(pandemic) is left to return. If a priority/ make it a priority.
Thanks.
