Why do people continue to have arguments here about a singular god? God this, god that, god the other. We live on a planet that has huge numbers of gods that people believe in, past and present.
Believers talk about the god they believe in. That's one out of 3,000 +. Forget the others. Agnostics talk about their agnosticism about "god". That's the one they grew up with and care about. Forget the others. Even atheists , my position, sometimes say they are atheists about "god". No, you're atheist about ALL of them, and that's consistent anyway.
I get so sick of posts and comments about "god". It's not just semantics. It's a fact that we don't all believe, not believe or are agnostic about one damn god. Yet on it goes.....
On a single god planet it would be fine. Maybe there is one out there. Like the Krill, the religious fanatic aliens in tv show The Orville. They probably argue about their singular God "Avis" there. But that's not our planet.
I put this comment in a post, but this point ticks me off so much i decided to post it.
I aknowledge that there are many non-existant gods out there. I am stuck speaking about the Christian god as that is the most prevelent god belief with the people that I interact with. It is annoying that god only seems to apply to one god as it discounts the possiblity of other gods that people freely aknowledge don't exist.
@David1955 I agree with you. I specialize in refuting one God by necessity. I do equilly discount the all when given the oppertunity.
Iām a bit partial to Ganesh and Shiva.
If some of the Hindu gods are put into a psychological context they are very useful tools for focussing on.
Mostly because everyone's concept of "god" is their god. The one they know and worship(ped). Even I have this tendency. I am only intellectually up on what liberal Christians, much less people of other religions, think about god. As as former fundie, I tend to think about god in terms of the god hypothesis I was raised with.
Still ... all standard-issue interventionist gods ... and most non-interventionist ones ... are supernatural and invisible and therefore not really discussable or definable or substantiatable anyway. They are all non-starters. Make up what you will. Which is what people generally do.
There is nothing that requires me to discuss all gods equally.
@David1955 Discussing all gods equally defies logic. None of the other fictitious gods impact my life in any way.
Many atheists seem to be as obsessed with the Christian god as the evangelical Christians.
Using the ubiquity of Evangelical Christianity in USA seems to be the justification.
Perhaps it's because so many of us lived out lives in pursuit of such God, made decisions based on such God, denied our intellect and common sense for such God. That's why we talk about that God.
In addition, we live lives where admitting to our agnosticism compromises our friendships, places job promotions in peril, narrows our romantic prospects.
The other 2,999 gods in history have no impact on my life so there's no need for me to discuss those gods.
In addition to the various traditional mythical gods, there is a philosophical god, one that is sometimes described as āall that there isā, āthe ground of all beingā, āultimate realityā, etc.
There is no harm in labeling or speculating about a philosophical god, but we should admit that no one has any idea of what they are talking about at that higher realm of reality and that we are merely playing with semantics.
Well the judeo-christian god is the one most of us relate to. I wish there more ex-muslims, hindu, Sikhs etc here but there aren't. Most people are here are from USA where Christianity is an insidious problem. In fact I'd say it is Christianity that is the main cause for alarm in our own country with our happy clapper PM and his not so merry men.
But feel free to post about other gods. Perhaps we should have a thread about our favourite god. I'm intrigued with Baron Samedi from Haiti
*Baron Samedi is a voodoo god of the dead, though he is frequently associated with obscenity, chaos, debauchery and intoxication. Perhaps the weirdest thing about this god is his appearance. He is a reanimated skeleton who wears sunglasses, a top hat, and a tuxedo. Samedi also sports cotton nasal plugs, resembling a corpse prepared for burial.
Pretty cool huh?
Some people are still working out personal issues about something they grew up with regarding religion.. They are looking for support or feedback...
Thanks for another post about god lol
@David1955 I knew you were gonna say that!
