Fantasies

I think we err in equating true love to something permanent. I suspect it is the way we feel towards our children (when they're asleep 🙂) and if we are talking about between adults then it incorporates the same elements but with added levels of respect for their adulthood eg. independence, decision making ability, strengths etc. Because love without respect is nothing. If you're really lucky it includes sexual desire. However because we may change dramatically through our lifetime it seems unreasonable to expect that this love would be unchanging.

What's true love? I asked a couple that once and was told, true love lasts forever. So what if it doesn't last forever I asked. The answer was that then it's not true love. That's when I gave up, so if you're going to ask the question we need an operational definition of true love

I do not buy "forever" as a test....it is the everyday minutia that makes my heart sing.

@AnneWimsey I completely agree.

If "true love" ever existed, there's no reason to believe it no longer exists. But did it ever exist?

In love, as in war, what's true for one may not be true for the other. I count myself lucky that my partner and I continue.

Yes, but then I feel very fortunate. I fell hard my senior year in high school and the rest was history. After four years of steady 'dating' through college, 38 years of marriage, two grown kids and the challenges faced by any relationship, I am a firm believer in true love. But it has to be right for both--it means replacing "me" or "I" with "us" or "we." One partner picks up the slack when the other is low and one partner kicks the other in the butt when it's needed. Total trust--both are all in. True love is beyond the physical, and includes a total partnership and full commitment to the pair or team, not the individual.
