Religious people keep talking about purpose as if an externally defined purpose is anything other than tyranny.

Rick & Morty captured it perfectly with the butterbot.

Why didn't I think of any of this stuff? That's the only part that makes me sad.

Please explain the difference between external and internal purpose.

Religious people don't seem to be able to make decisions for themselves. They need the help of a social group to decide what to believe in, and it makes sense that they would need the approval of their social group to find a purpose in life.

thats all a matter of your perspective. if I am driving from east to west in the morning then I seem to be heading into darkness with bright behind me. If another person, going to the same destination, is driving east from the west then they are coming from darkness heading into the light. both are going to the same place, but the perspective is different. some people work better with clear goals and a purpose.

@Novelty and it's not all delusional. thinking it is all delusional is ill-informed and likewise delusional.

What is our purpose? Stopped thinking about that. My kids have no desire or inclinations to have kids - I'm fine with that (don't give a shit what my ex wants, it is their lives). I have been told by old students and their parents I did great stuff (blah, blah - one of their grandchildren may be the next Hitler). Now, all I want is a little contentment (and the death of religion).

I love Rick and Morty. My son introduced me. They have so many good commentaries on society.

I have had purpose throughout my life. My career, as a father, and many other times. None of it to do with pleasing god.
Now that I am older, retired, and children grown my purpose is to enjoy the fruits of my time here and enjoy the time I have left.

They live as a slave to the ideas of Iron-Age, barbarian, patriarchal, goat-herders.

Why do people need a purpose? I have lived many years without a defined purpose and it has not stressed me that I have no purpose in life.

There's a reason that 'Islam' means 'submission'. Not that any of the other great faiths are any different.

If this could only be taught to Evangelicals we would all be better off.
