How will the advent of self-driving cars change your life or the lives of others? Will it have an impact on you personally? Will you embrace the technology or cling to that stick-shift! 🙂

There are obvious challenges to it. There have already been a couple of deaths and crashes because of self driving cars.

It has good aspects, they will be vastly safer than the current system. Car sharing will mean fdwer cars on the road, less congestion, less pollution. People will gain huge amounts of time, now the car can drop off the kids and pick them up after school and soccer practice.
That being said, huge economic changes. Tens of millions of drivers will be out of work. And that's just the direct impact. Far fewer accidents will put a lot of body shops out of work. Less demand on medical facilities. Fewer traffic cops needed. Basically this is going to be a huge change in how we live our lives, especially since drivers will be just one of the professions eliminated by the incipiant robot revolution. Basically we are on the cusp of a second industrial revolution, the first made manual labour largely obselete, skilled labour is next. Going to be interesting to say the least.

It isn't just drivers: most jobs will disappear over the next decade, but there will be the same amount of wealth in the system, so a standard income for all will resolve the problems (while people who still work will get extra to compensate them for their time).

@David_Cooper I agree, and civilised countries are already fazing in basic income and reducing the work week. Alas, the US isn't one of those countries, and expect it will get ugly here.

Bring 'em on.

Honestly, the moment I can feel confident the car can drive more safely than I can, I want it.

For most errands they can't get here soon enough for me. I can pretend I'm rich and am getting chauffeured around.

Are you kidding? I can hardly wait. I realize that it could be hacked, but if not, I would rather program my destination, then sit back and read a book. At my age, I don't want to be driving at night anyway.

I will be especially careful on the road if I see one as I heard that they have a tendency to kill people...I will continue on my motorcycle.

Once they've reached the point where they no longer require a qualified driver behind the wheel to take control should doing so become necessary, they'll have a huge impact on my life as I've never learned to drive. Since it's likely that they'll dramatically reduce private car ownership, they'll ultimately have a huge and beneficial effect for the entire world too.

Will we have a choice really?

like many things, it's a double-edged sword or even all things. no more drink driving and no more crashes but even more fucked if you break down and no fun at all. banger racing will be called driving around a track sensibly.

Can't afford a normal car so won't be seeing a self driving one for a long time

I for one welcome our computer overlords! I'm 64 and I am tired of driving on roads that are crammed with people who are over tired from working two jobs or stressed out. Yes it will change things, think of the carriage makers when cars came out. Many changes will need to happen before we see driverless cars. For one and the biggest is income, we need to equalize the income so that we, as a society can move forward and not have a mulri level society.

Would be a gift if I lived long enough to see it. I have issues with my hands and have virtually stopped driving.

As a delivery driver this speaks to me personally. A machine is going to take over my job. Finally all that free time and luxury! ... or I'll be homeless. ?

Legally they have to have someone in the driver's seat at the mo so don't panic yet

@SimonMorgan1 Oh, it'll be a few years at least. It's not like I'll be out of a job next week. But I'm largely trapped in this job due to the circumstances, so it's still a little unnerving.

As I am legally blind, and have not driven a car since i was 29, an dam no 55, I think it would be great to be able to be readily mobile again.

I had read that they were not planning to require a driver's license to operate one, but with that pedestrain fatality a few weeks ago, they may decide to require one after all... even though it was the pedestrain's fault and the "safety driver" in the test car said even if he were at the wheel there would have been no wy to avoid it.

So, driverless cars have th potential to change mylife drastically for the better. It is just a question of will they allow it.

It was clear from the video that a human driver would likely have run her down too, but they may have applied the brakes and reduced the impact energy a fraction - Uber's system is faulty as it didn't react at all, even though the lidar on it (which can see in the dark) should have seen the incident coming long enough in advance to reduce speed and change course. Even so, their self-driving cars may be safer than the average human driver even with that fault, and if the stats back that up, they should not only be allowed, but all inferior human drivers should be banned from driving.

@David_Cooper It has occured to me that this can kind of kill Nascar. But then I see that as a positive thing.

As for human drivers... I think they will keep them, but if driverless technology is available, i think they shoudl greatly increase teh requirements for a driver's license as a matter of public saftety.

In Japan, most American driver's would not qualify for a license to drive a cr, as it is rely difficult to qualify for a driver's license there. Of course they have great mass transit alternatives, which is how they can do that without a negative economic impact.

@snytiger6 I'm sure it won't stop motor racing taking place. It won't even completely stop people driving on the roads, because there's no reason why you shouldn't control the car within reasonable limits and be overridden by software if you go beyond them. That means you won't need a driving licence to drive, and you'll be able to put a child at the wheel while a red light flashes every time they're overridden. The fun of driving can thus be extended to all, while software keeps everyone safe.

For most people it will simplify things once they are truly autonomous. They will be devastating for jobs in the transportation industry.
I love driving my stick shift but I will embrace the technology anyway.
