Can't help but wonder if Mitt, seeing Trump struggle with this and the damadge Trump is doing to his own reelection prospects (and how just about anybody could beat Trump right now) isn't doing this to try and supplant Trump.

Just about every non rabid partisan, and even some rabid ones, will most probably vote for Biden over Trump. Thier base isn't going anywhere - they'll hold thier nose and vote R no matter what - but the base alone won't carry them to victory. They need to flip moderate votes to get the electorial win (they don't care about winning the popular vote, if you hadn't noticed) and showing that you can even pretend to care about "the little guy" goes a long way when 1.5T was just sent to wall st. The Bernie left has convinced themselves that they can vote for the anointed one himself or no one, so there's no real concern about them helping Biden - shit, theyre showing such maturity they'd probably vote for Mitt just to be dicks.

Trumps unraveling. The thing about a strongman in charge is that once thier appears to be a crack in thier armour everyone pounces. Trump has a very small window to get on top of this but it's probably above his and his handpicked (for loyalty, not competence) staffs/administration's abilities can do.
