Keep your fallen friends and family alive in your memories and they will live on in many ways. That’s the soul to me - the memories of people living in your mind and influencing your thoughts with the impressions they made. My notion is that people create their own soul by influencing others. What you leave behind is not what you were or what you were going to be - its simple what you are now that is impressed across the mines of family friends neighbors and anybody you have made contact with in life. To fall into sorrow is to have been deeply impressed by someone you will never forget. I bet your fallen loved one made such a big impression on you that it changed your life - that can’t be undone and it will pass the test of time. You heard of the butterfly effect - every little action creates a reaction and the waves of influence cascade out all over the world. I’m sure your people stirred up this world a lot more than a butterfly and look what the butterfly did - it change everything by just existing. Just existing is a lot bigger thing than it seems and when you add personality and character the wave of influence can be immense with no limits. When you think about it, its impossible to die. We are the sum of our influences and those influences never die - the wave of influence will continues to ripple out until there is no such thing as time.
Peace and love my friend. I bring it all the way from the ‘70s in a wave that’s still influencing.

I agree. Once all the people who remember us have died, we are effectively erased from this world. There are, of course, gravestones or maybe even, for some of us who are exceptional, books, programs, or buildings, etc. with our name on them. But even then, most of us are pretty well gone from the human drama and conversations that go on after we die. I do not believe that anything else of us goes on like a supernatural soul that lives even after those who knew us are gone.

If we live on it would get way too crowded anyway. Out with the old and in with the new is the practical approach to the timeline. One of my creative dreds is that a hundred years from now Mustang Sally and Brown-Eyed Girl will still be played by every cover band. It's hard to introduce something new when there is already a multitude established - new gets lost in the noise if the old doesn't fade out. I can't imagine being trapped with a jealous god that needs constant praise for an eternity so I'm all for a definite end - I just hope that it's timely.

When you add personality and character you become the soul through your animation. Once dead you no longer have this and will live on mostly in memories of others.

Everybody dies, it's a natural thing. If anybody remembers you after you kicked the bucket, a memory of you might be alive for the person that is thinking about you, yet you're still dead for all practical purposes.

I'm sorry, but you must have been smoking something just before you wrote that. What a mishmosh!

hey the world is on fire and we are all up in smoke now, and you don't even have to inhale to enjoy it. But I would advise it, even if you have to use a ventilator.
Actually, I came up with the above when I was trying to comfort my pot dealer after his brother Dan died this week. I had played with the thought of the soul ( your essence) being a collective of the phenomenon known as an influence and impressions. When people are gone forever it's hard to take - that's why religion took off so well - you don't really die in there mishmosh. Dan and family are nonreligious and they deserve to have a mishmosh to compete with the treasure trove of religious mishmoshes lol Hey it's all mishmosh until agreed on and then we can call it whatever we want - the gospel for instance or the word.

Well, at least you're consistent. Party on.

I do this frequently especially for friends lost in Vietnam

Man, it may sound silly but all my brothers lost and gone came to help me write that because I thought of every one of them. It's almost plagiarism lol. They made me cry and I needed it. They are all right here with me every day. I couldn't run them off if I had to. But it's not like being haunted at all. These guys will make you spit beer across the room, in laughter, out of the clear blue, just by remembering a shared hilarious mishap if you happen to think of one of them. And they can make you cry at the movies about something silly because only you know that it was something your friend really wanted but was never able to achieve. You cannot help but be influenced and even not impressing anyone would be pretty impressing on its own. Sometimes less is more lol you know - you left a gap that gives others a chance to impress. It all works out somehow to be what it is and that is, the awareness that we must be careful of what we do in life or we will create dark spots on our collective soul that is embedded in a world of people and that's the kind of souls that can haunt people to their grave, even way after your gone.

Instead of talking about heaven and other silly things, I always ask people to remember all the wonderful memories they shared with their loved one and keep them in their hearts forever.

That's the spirit and I think memories are the real spirit of a person in reality.
The church tells us what their god is made of outright. "The word is God and God is the Word" which clearly means the god they built is made out of words and word alone. We all know words are the cheapest material to use to build a god and the words of ancients were in great supply because not much else to talk about being primitive and ignorant to all science and medicine and without today's knowledge of the universe.
But spirits are made out of memories and memories are made by living people, not invisible undetectable beings and cheap words, but real flesh and blood and character and they can touch you like no word god can - physically, emotionally and intellectually and lovingly -
