COVID 19

Who wants to live for ever?
Better a day as a lion than a year as a sheep

COVID 19 is a virus ... that is all ... we had the flue pandemic in 1918-19 ... more recently ... AIDS, SARS and we still have tuberculosis and malaria around

the base facts of COVID are

  1. about 80% of people infected show mild or no symptoms
2 about 18% will feel like crap for a while, but will recover
3 about 1 - 2% will die (in the west with health care) ... but likely to much higher in undeveloped countries
4 anyone with underlying health conditions is more likely to die (bad news for little old diabetic me)

There are many personal tragedies as people are dying in advance of when they would have ...... many elderly and sick people will die this year... causing death rates will spike now, but be reduced for the coming years.

Think of the herds of wildebeest and zebra migrating across Africa ... the lions, crocs, etc prey on the weak, slow and injured, removing them from the herd, but leaving the herd stronger and fitter. COVID 19 is this years predator on humankind.

It is a natural event, that comes around every so often .... most people will survive with nothing worse than sad memories of this time.

On first pass Covid-19 appears to be much worse than the typical cold or flu, we have no vaccines and limited defenses against it, and even our individual immune systems haven't seen anything quite like it. We are still learning scary new things about it: [scmp.com] the idea we should just let it "run its course" is literally advocating surrender. Who cares if granny dies, right, she was old? Way too many young and healthy people are dying as well, and then people dying because the health care system is overwhelmed, I have a friend whose cancer surgery has been "postponed until further notice." The whole point of civilization is to fight for our lives in common defense, not throw granny to the wolves when times get tough. Buck up man.

I am not saying we should just et people die ... simply that this pandemic is a natural event. We have a choice .. to skulk in a back room frightened we may catch a virus that we have a 98% chance of surviving ..... or we can choose to get on with living

@ShadowAmicus Yes, that's exactly what you are saying, throw granny to the wolves because it would cost the rich too much money to save her.

@Druvius I am not advocating that anyone at high risk be forced to go out and swap spit with all and sundry ... but if someone is happy with taking a chance on catching the virus they should be allowed to.

@ShadowAmicus If the only life they were risking was their own, no problem. That's not the case they, they are risking other people's lives by ignoring the law.
