Kudos to Costco.

I was literally out of food (really, nothing), so this morning I went to the Costco in North Wales, PA, just north of Philly. They opened at 8:00 AM officially, though when I got there about 7:40 or so the doors were open.

No line, you were presented a just-sanitized cart as you entered. While shopping, they had employees with "social distance 6 feet" signs who would politely let you know you were getting too close to others. In the frozen/chilled section, they had at least two people wiping down the glass and especially, handles of the display cases non-stop. Stock levels were excellent, and some items were marked with an indication as to how many you were limited to. The only OOS item was TP.

Check out lines were short. Once ready to go, I was out in less than 10 minutes. There are very well designed plexiglass shields to protect the clerks; to check my membership card, I held it against the glass so she could scan the bar code and verify my membership.

This was about as good as it gets. I love Costco.

I envy you and your access to a Costco. I would have to drive 54 miles to get to one.

Sound like they have their act together. I am a member (low rates for tires and glasses) but seldom shop there. I have to take a ferry to the mainland and drive 1/5 hour. We have been told going to the mainland necessitates a 2 week self-quarantine on our return. Not worth the hassle.

The Sam's clubs here in Springfield Mo. are set up much the same, an employee was sanitizing carts for shoppers, tape on the floor for spacing all through the store. Some shelves were empty of products but plenty of TP.

I went to Costco today in Baxter, MN. They had plenty of TP in stock and no sign of panic buying. Maybe the TP crisis has run it's course. I agree, it's a very well managed business.

Sometimes things work out. That's great!

I have a very similarly comforting experience at Aldi. Shows it can be done ! : )

I have shopped at Aldis since the isolation began and they are doing a pretty good job but their clerks do not wear masks and even with a shield that bothers me because I've seen customers deliberately go around the shield because they can't hear well enough are some other reason.

@Lorajay They seem to be leaving it up to individuals to decide on a mask - probably not the best idea ...

@evergreen I decided to switch to Homeland. They do everything Aldis does plus everyone wears a mask. Their prices are a little bit higher and their store is a lot bigger with a lot less customers.

@Lorajay we don't have them here ...

I have never been inside one but it sounds like you had a very good experience.

I think they do a pretty good job. I always fill my car there and that saves me around $300 per year on fuel. Easily worth the membership.

Any store that charges you for membership should do that.

It is worth it. Even being single, I save far more than the membership cost. A typical store runs a margin of 20% - 30%. Theirs is 10%. Plus, in non-COVID times, all of the yummy samples. Shopping is actually fun.

@MissKathleen Me too. I bought a 4-pack of Kerrygold today. I also bought about 12 pounds of ribeye steaks and saved $18-$24 on those. Plus, they are better quality than those I can get in the closer-to-me supermarket.

I guess I should join

The wine is surprisingly good, and the roast chicken is better than Fry's (Kroger) Larger and costs $1 less.

Sure wish our local stores used the same playbook...
