Have you ever had an unorthodox (human) best friend?

When I moved to Thailand in 2010, I was 57 years old,

While shopping, I accidentally dropped my wallet, so I went to the police station for help.
A 22 year old Thai police lieutenant found my wallet at the Tesco-Lotus lost-and-found, and afterward, worked out a deal where I taught him English in exchange for him teaching me Thai and driving me to nearby birding spots.

We'd hike for hours through Khao Yai National Park, where I photographed snakes, hornbills, wild elephants, etc.

We went to many temples and exciting places near Saraburi, Thailand, as well, and when he tried one of my inventions, "the gallopers" he was so excited he began coming over every day to "borrow them" for a few minutes.

I finally made a pair for him as well, and we would go zipping through the jungle, up the steepest trails, play gallop-soccer for hours each evening until the stars came out.

The whole time we'd be cracking political jokes and yucking it up.
He became the closest friend I'd had since my sister, but more like a guy pal.

I had some unusual friends in college. I'll give you the PG version to not offend anyone. My roommate my freshman year was such a character. She was rich, her father built shopping centers across the country, weighed under 100 lbs, 5 ft 2" with 40D bosom. She waddled when she walked and believe it or not this was a breast reduction. She had a real life crush on Lorne Greene, kept a knockwurst under her pillow, blasted Chuck Berry and was my first encounter with a nymphomaniac. On parents day my parents walked in on her and some guy in the shower. She always had weed and pills of all kinds, later coke with a boyfriend. So many stories but sometimes I had to sleep in the dorm lounge because she had people in the room all night-multiple partners. One night she slept somewhere else and I had some strange guy crawl in bed with me saying "she said I could stay here." She met this guy and moved off campus. He had a roommate she tried to fix me up with - cute guy I liked but I had a boyfriend at the time. Long story short she ended up marrying the roommate years later and they've been together for over 30 years with one son. Just one friend.

I've always been attracted to persosn who dont' fit societal norms. I think it is because i was raised so conservative, which was really agains tmy internal nature, that I sought out unusual persons because they were different and interesting.

MOST of what friends I had as a kid were unorthodox. Seemed like I was drawn to them, as I felt they had things to say that no one else wanted to listen too, because they were taken at face value and judged to be unworthy. I alway lived by something I read somewhere, that everyone is a book, with a story waiting to be read.

That is a great story & I'm glad you found such a great friend! I don't see it as in any way "unorthodox" tho. I just see it as a wonderful friendship. Am I missing something? The age difference, maybe? You are most definitely not 'old', at least not in your energy & activities. So, maybe I'm dense.

Thanks. I was a senior citizen white woman and he was a young Thai officer- I've never seen close friends with such disparities, but in the end it worked out perfectly for me. I am a high energy extreme birder and he was someone who could keep up with me, and didn't complain.

My best friend of all of them was definitely unorthodox. He ran a successful mail order business. He was a member of American Atheists, and was instrumental in a church state separation case.

He was also a Nazi. He worshipped Hitler, and collected figurines of him.

He helped me out a lot, both with my own mail order business, as ell as some of the books I did. We'd talk for hours over the phone. Hitler came up as a subject only rarely. Since my father fought in WW2, I had an interest in that era, but purely for historical reasons.

I sometimes wonder how hos rational side and his Nazism managed to exist together. He had some troubles with his wife over it, but that's all.

He died a few years ago. I still miss him, flaws and all.

Good job you're not jewish.

sorry can't condone friendship with Nazi.
