Has anyone here started to lead a simpler life and decided to purge many of the things you have collected over a lifetime that you no longer need?

My most prized possessions all fit in my backpack. I have about two suitcases of clothes, work materials and files. That’s it for me. I wanna be moveable.

2

Yes. and it is sometimes not easy. I have sent my daughter most of my really personal files and items-- digpoma, awards, recognitions, trophies, and papers and over half of the volumes in my personal library (at one time well over 2,000 volumes). I have also purged 3 4-drawer file cabients of academic and professional materials I developed and/or used. I have also thrown away or given away clothes I no longer use, sliiping bags, and at least 500 - 600 books.
Many of those books, materials, and papers reflected the core of my professional life. It was hard partingwith them.

My mother sending me those things is one of the reasons I have so much stuff, @wordywalt. πŸ˜‰ It's sometimes hard for me to accept that getting rid of something doesn't mean I'm getting rid of the memory.

Yes! Downsizing has taken a lot of the last 3 years. I've gone from a large houseand storage unit to a condo. Still working on it.

2

Yes, I started with religion and the religious.

2

Depends... I've been moving more to electronic copies of books. I'm kind of forced to keep clothing in several sizes, if my autoimmunity comes back, I could easily gain 40-50 pounds of inflammation. And I have a lot of cooking gear I use at least a couple times a week.

Yes, I'm working on it. With the divorce we sold the house and got rid of lots of stuff, but there is a lot more to go.

2

Yes, and glad I did. There are still things I need to get rid of.

Yes, three years ago when I moved to Australia, good with it 95% of the time, but every so often I wish I had something a gave up. However, I'm happy with my decision.

Divorce is great at teaching you moderation in your life. I love it.

I did my Spring cleaning on Tuesday.

I might decide to hate you for that - I just can't get going .

@jacpod Awe. Put some music on, old clothing, and start with a closet. I did.

@Sarahroo29 its not spring here yet its still freezing!

@jacpod It rained and snowed yesterday. It will be overcast today.

@jacpod Put your parka and mittens on, and clean a room? Lol.

We haven't had much spring, it is flip flopping back and forth between winter and summer here in west central Texas.

@Sarahroo29 Oh! OK if you insist! I havent really got closets but I have a ton nad a half of craft materials to sort so yes OK - Seize teh day - onwards into battle with dust and debris!

@jacpod Lol. It's cold right now outside. It is 5:57 am though.

Edited: It snowed a little bit last night.

@DaveSchumacher April and May is our snow season in CO.

Yes. Kinda. I got rid of 15 boxes of books and gave away 3 truckloads (2 pickup, 1 boxvan) of stuff to goodwill when I moved to Seattle from the Silicon Valley. When I moved to my house from my initial rental house (AKA storage unit), more stuff was left out of the move. I've been working toward getting rid of stuff, especially for the last few years. Either giving stuff away or tossing it. If I have space in the garbage can, I look for things I can throw away.

I still have a lot of stuff but I am working on getting a place for everything I want to keep. Whatever is leftover goes. I figure if all the stuff I have, I either use or have it displayed, then I'm ok. Always a collector, never a hoarder...

Working on it, slow but sure

Hahaha I'm such a pack rat it's ridiculous!

I think that may have used to be a part of "Spring cleaning" for some people. You not only clean the house of dust, but of clutter.

If I stay in one residence for a while, I try to go through my stuff and reduce clutter.

When my dad died, I was the only one who had time to go through his stuff. it was mostly clutter and stuff that didnt' need to be saved. I think he died in 2012, but I found ultiity bills from the house where I grew up from the 1970's, even though he had moved more than half a dozen times since that residence. As moving costs are often based on weight, he paid to move stuff he never used or looked at over and over again.

I haven't yet begun, but I will be over the next year or so as I plan to move out of state.

1

I am going to soon.
I retire in 5 years, and plan on living on a boat and will need to down size drastically. Not to mention, I will be living on about half my current salary, so will have to be careful on the toys I buy... LoL

1

I began the "purge" a long time ago. I periodically go through everything I own, and get rid of what isn't necessary. The more I do it, the fewer things I have to get rid of.
It's to the point now where I can pack up and move in less than 48 hours, if I have to.
It's very freeing, and I'm not tripping over crap I don't need.

1

I hate clutter, regularlydiscard stuff...I get mentally "itchy" when there is too much stuff around.

1

Live simply, live well, you will see I wrote that on my profile page. A few years ago I got rid of all the things I had accumulated that just sat around. Gave most away to the Habitat for Humanity store nearby. I kept a couple of small sentimental things and decorative things. Home is clean, eaiser to keep clean, and I felt good donating. Win, win, win.

Sold all my tillage equipment and going to no plowing. Building out my solar/wind generator to get off grid. Thinking about sending my harpie back to her home country. [onestrawrevolution.net]

Masanouba Foukakawa! not sure spelt it right ... Microbiology Mayne .. Myceleum - soil webs .. Nice!

1

No. I hoard. I hoard therefore I am. I cannot get rid of stuff. It's probably a condition, but whatever - I like stuff.

1

ebdb - all the time mate! all the time! rubbish just seems to grow exponentially my age means I am not quite so fit at keeping up with the growth of utter nutter clutter so its like rolling htta stone up that bloody hill for ever and a day - its why I come on here!

1

I began to... slowly. Have gone through shelves and a few cupboards but still have lots to go. πŸ™‚

Years ago I began minimizing. I got rid of a bunch of stuff and I don't buy very many unnecessary things. I do buy dinosaurs for my yard; but, I have a certain number I plan to buy; and, after that--no more.

0

Absolutely. Very minimalist. I chose to travel living out of my car, a station wagon big enough to sleep in, for a while. Got rid of a lot of things to do it. Since settling into a place I've acquired as little as possible, and those things could be donated away if I wanted.
