I'm currently parenting a teen in the age of social media and instant gratification. She seems to think that a well paying job will land in her lap at the age of 18 because she's cute and has a lot of Instagram followers. No matter how many different ways I try to motivate her to succeed in school, she is simply not interested. I am at my wit's end. Anyone have experience and suggestions?

Instagram followers? Lol. I'm a 30-year-old single woman with no kids. I get one or two hearts on Instagram once I post a pic.

LOL

@Lani Ikr?

@Lani I have 25 FB friends that all ignore me too. As well as a dead Messenger. I just posted about it.

Totally understand. My daughter dropped out of High School senior year. Five years later hasn't tgone for GED. Waiting it out.

This is my fear. What do we do?

I had her in counseling but when I was in hospital she dropped out.

That has an odd ring to it in that “the age of social media” screams education, well beyond HS, be it academic or IT. Would it be possible to (subtly) sell the “glamorous” idea of college, possibly joining peers that appreciate how valuable education is for her tomorrows.
Tough love may have to be introduced in some form.
Good luck.

Tell her to start looking for a job now.

There aren't many places here that hire 15 year olds. She does odd jobs like babysitting and filing paperwork for an attorney friend. She's just so apathetic where it comes to school.

This is hard. She's at the age where parents don't understand and you can't tell her anything. I would only intervene if she seems to be hanging with a crowd that will put her in danger but other than that you are doing your best. You may just have to be her soft place to fall when she realizes that those plans won't work and she has to figure out what career she will pursue first in life.

You can only guide her but ultimately you can only get the horse to the water. your conscience is clear.
