Just a quick thought/observation: As I was walking my dogs today, I saw some door-to-door proseletyzers. I said a courteous "good morning" as we passed on the sidewalk, but there was no other engagement.

I got to thinking what would compel people to do that, to go from one house to the next trying to arouse someone's interest in something they may already be engaged in, or, more likely, not be at all interested in? They appeared to have no success the entire time I spent within visual distance of them, which was probably 10 minutes. How unsatisfying that must be.

Anyway, that set me thinking; they must do this as some sort of duty, I suppose. But, are they really doing it of "free will"? Or, do they feel an obligation in some way?

One of Christianity's big excuses for why "god" allows the horrible things to go on on Earth that humans do to each other, is free will. And yet, a tried and true maxim of Christianity says, "Not my will, lord, but thy will."

What kind of fucking sense does that make? Skydaddy gives us all the complete freedom and wherewithal to do what we want, but threatens to inflict everlasting torture on us if we don't turn our will to his bidding? How the fuck do they reconcile such nonsense?

Maybe I should have asked the missionaries.

Condor5 Ooooooh, you got my blood broiling reading your "missionary" story. I do know a bit about that having grown up Mormon to no fault of my own. Yes, the ones I know are bound as a vacuum salesman to their knocking on doors. They still hound me with threats of taking my name off the rolls, causing me to suffer and be rejected which they don't mind at all because they tried, and they will go to the celestial kingdom and I will burn in fire. I guess that's okay with righteous men. The facts are sickening to hear. The young missionaries actually have to "bind" themselves at night to prevent the abomination of masturbation. That's probably all you need to know. I left home the day I turned 18 because of the hypocracy! My MFA Thesis was based on the abuse of the patriarchy. I've written all the stories, so I won't state them here. Warm Regards, Suzette.

I actually joined the LDS church several years back, for a couple years. When I began to cohabitate with my then current S.O., they basically told me I wasn't supposed to do that. I left and never went back. Fuck 'em. Nearly 70 and they think that's a "sin"?

It's all about the Money.

The Biblical god is the most evil character in all fiction. No matter how bad I get I can, for sure, say I am better than god. I'm not a mass murderer, baby killer or rapist and I'm not envolved in the sex slavery trade.

See, I'm better than god!

Its a business of making money. One year i pledged to help some missionaries in mexico. You know the story. They want to build a school in the mountains and help get them running water. It clicks today that they get a free ride to live in a cool climate and come and go as they please. Anybody can study up and be a missionary and live the good life of having a talk with a few people and vacation where ever. You get enough churches to back you and its party time. Its a business. They don't care about you...its all about them.

Insanity makes people do all kinds of things. How big is your dog, and is it capable or willing to rip out a voice box?

Hah! No, I've got a couple Shih Tzus.

Its a load of bullshit

2

I always harass them when I see them in my neighborhood.

Usually it’s enough to make them leave everyone alone and move on.

I love this sign. LOL

Well, I like it, but the 'vibrator' part would have to be changed (at least for me).

@Condor5 I thought about selling sex toys at one time in my life. You know, like Tupperware parties only with dildoes. LOL

@BearsNPenn, probably very lucrative nowadays.

@BearsNPenn I'd likely be a customer! When I was with my ex we loved to visit sex shops and buy new toys, and we regularly ordered costumes.. I'd order different colored silk thongs for him, and he'd order such things as "naughty" air hostess outfits. We were very creative in our fantasy play.

The genious of manipulation, to convince others that it's thier will to surrender said will to someone or something else. "You are doing this on your own right...(shake your head in the affirmative like me)
Sow a seed (give me your money)
Make (him) your personal saviour: (your invisible friend)
Repent/Confession (tell me all your nasty business)
Saved (surrender your free will to Dogma)

I have asked/challenged a few of the "door knockers" unfortunately most were defensive, some were astounded that I knew more about thier religion than they did...made em nervous LOL

Yeah, the "confessional" bullshit, what a crock. Good way to manipulate people.

2

And the most important thing is that they get reputation, free food and the friendship and also often money by doing so. And also the confidence boost when they can really convert, as most people are already feeling guilty of not following the non-existing God's order. So, all profit right? Except the moment when they themselves realize the futility.

If they ever do realize the futility...

Door to door Evangelicals and Mormons are expected and forced to knock on doors or they will be ostracized in their community. The pressure is great and even shy individuals are paired with someone who is more confident and forceful. I have been told they are ordered to talk, but not listen to counter opinions.

That's one reason I don't bother trying to talk with them, their side of any argument/discussion they may engage in quickly becomes circular, all going back to "God's word."

I was up to my eyeballs involved in my church as a teenager. Monday night was "Calling". Our family went to the church, dinner was served and after we went calling. Our youth choir/group would go separately and they would drop a pair of us at each end of the block. Calling was just something we did, I didn't particularly like it (I was very shy) but mostly we just handed out tracts. Rarely discussed anything. I treated it more like a competition, who could get to the other end of the block the quickest. I was very much a follower, do what I was told, goody two shoes then, boy, if they could see me now!

From Matthew chapter 28
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

This is known as the Great Commission.....Jesus' followers are to preach and make converts.

I believe it is usually a requirement for whatever step they want or need to take in their religion. Without the requirement, we would rarely see it happening.

Does it seem like Jehovah's Witnesses are involved in a Pyrmaid Scheme?

Yes. It's kind of like that. The church I used to belong to grew their pyramid by not practicing birth control. But hey, I love my 6 kids 🙂.

2

Isn't it a requirement of their religion - to recruit?
