Why do you identify as being agnostic? Are you agnostic about unicorns, fairies and the gods of other cultures? What is the evidence that leads you to agnosticism?

Because that is what it says on my T-shirt!

And in brackets on the back (theist) or (atheist)?

Why not be agnostic about everything? The term has unfortunately acquired a very narrow definition that was unintended, i think.

Isn’t an “atheist” just someone who believes there is not any god or gods? One might deny this via some semantics exercise, but can we possibly get real for a second

Not really. Your “not” is in the wrong place, but whatever.

@indirect76 that doesn’t amount to the same thing? Strikes me as an escape by semantics wadr

@bbyrd009 In my view there is a definite difference. Not believing god does exists is different from believing god does not exist.

@indirect76 “existence” may not be the best metric anyway, tbh, but ty

@bbyrd009 You can replace “existence” with any other word or completely replace “god” as well. It’s completely besides the point.

“I do not believe <something>”

is different from

“I do believe not <something>“

@indirect76 ah, so

Thanks to everyone for the discussion.

Lots of incisive thinking from different angles.

This song title summarises the deepest thought deserving of being brought to bear in discussions on the veracity of deism and theism.
