In 1860, William Henry Burr produced a list of 4 self-contradictions in the Bible. Biblical scholars have studied inconsistencies in and between texts and canons as a means to study the bible and the societies that created and influenced it.
The Bible is an unreliable authority because it contains numerous contradictions. Logically, if two statements are contradictory, at least one of them is false. The biblical contradictions therefore prove that the book has many false statements and is not infallible.
there is something to be said if any of these category's would have even a slight contradiction
The Sabbath Day
The Permanence of Earth
Seeing God
Human Sacrifice
The Power of God
Personal Injury
Circumcision
Trusting God
The Holy Lifestyle
Punishing Crime
Temptation

The End of the World
Conclusion
God the Monoglot did a piss poor* job at conveying this so called "perfect message" to "his" special species
Hitch` said it best, god is NOT great! but his book was boring, i won't lie!
The problem with a literal interpretation of the bible is not only its absurdity but that it throws the baby out with the bathwater. Whatever good messages the book might contain is obscured by an all or nothing approach. It antagonises the atheist, agnostic and vaguely spiritual alike.
Now if you think that the bible holds no interest for you in any shape whatsoever? consider this. The old testament for all its flaws is a chronicle of a peoples transition from a nomadic existence to an agricultural one. Would be as dismissive of Australian aboriginal dream time or native American oral traditions?
We use ancient Greek stories of the gods all the time. It is our resentment of religious indoctrination that stops us from using the bible to illustrate a point.
The new testament implores us to act with personal compassion and is a-political. Despite the heavily charged political situation in Judea at that time. eg. The good Samaritan is a tale worth telling and repeating to many an alt-right Christian.
True. The Old Testament is "a chronicle of a peoples transition from a nomadic existence to an agricultural one", but it is also the story of how that was achieved by ultra nationalism, racism, warfare, land theft and the genocide of the existing agriculturalists. Taking the literal god belief out of it does not redeem it completely, or make it a good example. Nor does it prevent people of criminal intent cherry picking it to justify their evil intentions, by claiming those cherry picked parts to be justified by tradition and to be grand archetypical metaphors of their own interpretation of human nature.
The ancient Greek and Roman stories were used in just that way, to justify many of the most horrible aspects of European imperialism, including slavery, misogyny and racism, despite the fact that they were not believed literally by any Europeans since the five hundreds.
@Gwendolyn2018 Yes literal interpretations can make it worse.
All very true and well put. Again I write that the bible as we know it today contains 66 individual books all written at different times by different authors. These books were never intended to be bound together as one volume. If you are Catholic there are more books. These books came to be bound as one some 300 plus years after the time of Jesus. This was by decree and decided exclusively by religious people who never even saw or knew Jesus. How could it be accurate in any way? The big bible book was given a beginning and an end simply because books are assumed to have a beginning and an end. Evangelicals and others would be pissed to find that this book is not telling their future. It gets maniacal when you see that government policies have been and are continuing to be built around this nonsense.

Then, what people often do that is not logical is to assume that biblical reference to "the word of God" is meaning Zues wrote the bible is incorrect.
The people are the gods. The people being gods wrote the biblical text and collectively it is referred to as "the word of God".
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods"’? John 10:34
I am no expert on apologizing for errors in biblical text but a major factor is that copying machines were not avaliable 1000s of years ago and copies were done by hand. This is as I understand it to be a major source for many of the apparent contradictions.
