This is Sumela Monastery, built in the 4th century, located on a cliff in Turkey (1200 meters above sea level).

Mesa Verde had the same idea. Inaccessability as a form of defense. 1190 AD

Are there gender restrictions? When I was in Italy women were barred from some monasteries. Things have changed much since back then hopefully.

I see what appears to be a cave, or perhaps a tunnel, that could have been used in construction and access.
