From the New York Times;-
"In the U.S., Covid has now been responsible for almost 800,000 deaths. One in every 100 Americans ages 65 or older has died from the virus. For people younger than 65, that ratio is closer to 1 in 1,400. "

....... Well, maybe Mother Nature, backed by anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists, is attempting to supply an answer to nations having to support an ever more aging, pension-drawing society.

Too many? In the UK a portion of wages was paid into pensions to provide for payment of people when they retired. Here in Australia it's called superannuation.
The problem is that stupid and greedy politicians have not properly regulated the business so that money actually funded has been wasted on speculative rather than secure investment like government bonds.
A friend put his teacher's super into debentures suposedly policed by the Queensland State Trustee. When the borrower ceased payment of interest it then took the trustee more than a year to do anything. By then it was too late. More than 10 years on investors have been defrauded of 90% of their investment, the perps are still running free and the cost to the taxpayer of some 20,000 previously self funded retirees has been about $5 billion! And that was merely one of many!
I believe that similar has occurred in the UK with its pension funds.
And of course that doesn't explain the extortionate fees charged by banks & by other fund managers. Another acquaintance had his savings reduced from $100k+ to $92k overnight when an Australian bank transferred his money from one account to another when he reached 65!

You seem to have all missed the point of this post, which is that there are too many elderly people in the "civilised" world for their children to support.

Few of their children support them in any way. I live amongst many of them. It is shameful.

The point that you are missing Petter is the fact that 1% own 95% of the wealth. How many meals can a person eat each day?
How many houses can they live in? How many shoes, trousers, shirts & coats can they wear at once? The answer is only one.

Some have been touting that everyone irrespective of age, employment, annual income be paid additionally a basic wage.

I thought I read that Switzerland did it several years ago.

Therefore it is no longer a question of child support but one of equitable sharing of resource.

You do not belong to the state that owns the resources vice versa - the state & its resources belong to each person and you are not, as the Americans seem to think, entitled to steal it through war or threat of war.

Why would their children be supporting them if they had Social Security? This is not 1900 but some people would like to take us back there again.

@DenoPenno It's their children who pay the taxes that are used to supply pensions.

@MsKathleen "their children" covers everyones children, not their specific offspring. Someone has to pay tax.

@MsKathleen, @FrayedBear You're on a tangent. The bottom line is that the percentage of the population being supported, multiplied by the years during which they are supported, is insupportable by the percentage of people working and paying taxes for 40 odd years.
Nature is lendng a hand by culling those of pensionable age.
I am a drain on society. I ceased to be productive in 2009.

@Petter I do not agree with you Petter.

Your existance is in itself a productive force.

Your existance creates the need to fulfil your specific requirements of food, shelter, transport, entertainment, medical, security, education, and civil governance with its varied services.

You still contribute to treasury through VAT on what you purchase if not income tax on dividends earned from returns on savings.

@Petter Only because corporations are not paying their share of taxes whilst sucking the public purse dry.

Seniors are more likely to have underlying conditions that allow the virus to take a stronger hold on them than healthy youngsters. All the more reason to (1) be fully vaccinated and “boostered” and (2) live a healthier lifestyle.

I call bullshit here. Are nations having to support more aging, pension drawing people in our societies? In America an insurance program called Social Security is funding Medicare and Medicaid. Society is not doing very much of this or using funds that are needed elsewhere. The rich have nothing to gain by killing us off either. The reason why is that Social Security is an insurance program. I am amazed at those who cannot get this through their heads. Yes, the GOP thinks we all need a 401K started at birth to get rid of the Social Security they do not like but that idea will not work. For those who can remember, Trump was going to start in with Social Security when he was re-elected. He said so publicly and he did not mean he would give us a better system.

Nature's way of thinning the herd.

If they refuse to acknowledge the reality of this global pandemic, they are idiots.
If people don't want to heed sound medical advice, if they refuse to get vaccinated or wear a mask, that's their choice.
If they get sick and die, that's on them.
I'm fine with their removal from the population.

Where I'm having trouble is with allowing them to get away with endangering others.
Their choice effects everyone around them.
I don't think they have the right to put other people at risk.

The funny part is; more have died under Biden with a vaccine than Trump without a vaccine.

In my opinion, Mother Nature has no purpose, no agenda. It just does what it does obeying the laws that govern it.

Get vaccinated, if you are then get your booster.

anti vaxxers and conspiracy theorists can't be credited with being much of an influence on Mother Nature can they? shes been at this a long long time. she has this figured.

People die everyday but in a pandemic it's easier to die if you are stupid and don't take proper steps to protect yourself and others from contagion.

THAT.
