Depends on the quality of the clown... some have genuine skill, and that is always a delight. But then, I spent some time performing with a circus... so I'm biased.

Some people find clowns disturbing because their features are frozen by makeup, always smiling or frowning, no matter what.
Authors and filmmakers have taken great liberty to exploit that fear.

I won't live in fear, and clowns don't bother me.
