On the PBS Newshour tonight, New York Times columnist David Brooks opined that for Republicans, being anti-gun legislation is not a matter for debate. Rather, like belief in Trump's big lie that the 2020 election was stolen, being against gun control is a Republican talisman, a tribal marker, what T.S Elliot called an "objective correlative."
If Brooks is correct in his analysis, when Republicans say they oppose legislation that would limit access to guns, they are merely signalling their membership in a tribe. And their desire to remain in the tribe, and fear of being ostracized by their tribe, is greater than any desire to be logical, or reasonable, or to protect school children from losers wielding military weapons.
If this is true, then we are truly in a dark place. This is how Nazi ideology swept through Germany in the 1930s.
Now apply your "protect school children from losers wielding military weapons" to USA fomenting trouble & arming insurgents around the world not just with rifles but land & sea mines, rockets, tanks & cruise missiles and you will understand why Russia took action to prevent Russian speaking Ukrainians from fascist genocide in Ukraine.
Tut tut! You're conflating, Russian bear.
@Flyingsaucesir until you acknowledge the fact that they are linked.
@FrayedBear It's really too late to play that card, because Putin already revealed his reason for invading Ukraine, i.e. to reestablish the Russian empire. And Putin justified his actions by denying the existence of a Ukrainian identity, state, or culture. And Russia's overt actions to erase the Ukrainian state and Ukrainian culture constitute genocide. So no surprise that Europe and the USA are helping a European country fend off an illegal invasion by a rogue state. If Putin's Russia doesn't like what's happening in Ukraine, they should get the f**k out.
@Flyingsaucesir so when you hear your sister\ mother\ other female relative being subjected to disrespect & violence you just walk away?
Putin said he wanted to expand Russia 20 years ago when US governments started plotting to provoke Russia into defending Russian speakers in Ukraine?
Please stop being childish.
@FrayedBear You are trying to defend the indefensible. Even if what you claim were true (there is no evidence that it is) Russia had no right to meddle in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.
@Flyingsaucesir now you project to protect your fragile brain & ego.
@FrayedBear Better try to sell your psychobabble somewhere else. No one here is buying it.
@Flyingsaucesir do I care?
You see a dark place. I see opportunity.
Opportunity to change many minds from fascistic to democratic?
@Flyingsaucesir Changing the minds of people whose minds can be changed. Ignoring the others.
And, much more often than not, the shootings serve the GOP purpose of intimidating minorities that lean democrat. Students, Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, and LBGTQ that the GOP would like to disenfranchise, also happen to be the targets of mass shooters. How convenient!!
