Politics increasingly a deal-breaker on US dating scene: [bbc.com]

Who in their right mind would want to date anybody who is sufficiently socially and emotionally defective to support Trumpty Dumpty and Crew?

It's at the top of each of my dating profiles. "If you like trump you won't like me". And it's true, and it works.

Since Trump was elected:

I refuse to date a Trump supporter.

People may frown and judge me for generalizing, but I do not like trump supporters. I find them ignorant, arrogant, aggressive, entitled, dumb, and unpleasant. There's no other way to whitewash the fact that they support domestic terrorism. They support treason, regardless of how they try to justify it.

And no, I do not find the other side to be "just as bad." Sure, they have their faults, but not like the GQP does.

And again, no. I'm not going to be friends with people who I think represent dangerous thinking. There are just certain people in this world that I CANNOT respect or be friends with. I'll be civil in regular interactions, but close friendship is not going to happen.

I have a friend, ex trump kind of guy. Sloooowleee he came to some of his senses, not all.

He wastes his life away now, "studying" the buybull. He's kind of becoming a wanna be JWitness.

But anyway to get to my point, he laughs at and belittles the Dems & Reps as "just being the same....they both lie". His ignorant laziness is of course what brought him to Trumpism in the 1st place. (& now "deep" religion)

But what got my attention....he recently sent me a text saying "God does not want you in the middle (of belief? I assume).....but here he is in the MIDDLE of decent and evil .............

Everyone has mirrors. Not everyone uses them.

Generalising from your comments, I am frightened of people who seek to control others because of their own overpowering personal insecurities.

Used to be a persons weight or body type was the deal breaker. Then it was smoker vs non-smoker. Now yes it's politics.

I can't imagine dating a Trump supporter, election denier, religious nationalist, racist, etc., and that should be learned before or during a first meeting, unless a Trumper knows this disadvantage and lies about it.

Years ago, I had dated a fellow who proclaimed to be liberal, but after we went our separate ways, he friended me on FB and I could see his hateful socio-political views. He had me fooled for several months.

The only "great" part of the past I'm missing at this point is when we could all get along without caring at all what a person's political views were. Sadly the politics have changed people's personalities to the point where the conservatives are being trained not to get along with the moderates and liberals or to be a snake and pretend to be someone they're not just to take advantage of the liberals they hate so much.

Yep, politics is about equal in religious views for me in choosing a potential romantic interest. The list of boxes to check is getting longer.

The fellow that you dated fits the description of a sociopath.

@anglophone Not sure if I'd label him as a sociopath, but rather someone just doing all he could do date someone normally out of his league. I've definitely met some true sociopaths since then and many borderline. Kinda hard to draw a line of who is and who isn't sometimes!

@Julie808 Thanks for that feedback. 🙂

It goes both ways, like everything. I have shared on these boards recently about running across several women on Match who were closet Trumpers or conservatives, but listed themselves on their profiles as Independent or Moderate for their political affiliation. Why they bothered replying to my message, after seeing my profile and that I was a Bernie supporter, is beyond me. But I think the reason they hid their real political position was to be able to get a foot in the door for dating guys that might not care about their politics if the woman was attractive and compatible enough for the guy otherwise. Didn't fool me tho, once I either began trading messages with them or met them in person for coffee. They rejected me and I rejected them, for whatever reasons, but I'm sure politics was probably part of it, for both them and me.

My other two dealbreakers, on my end, besides someone being a conservative or Trumper, is being a daily smoker, or a big fan of country music. But that last one is because music is so important to me, as well as the fact that most country music fans also tend to be very different from me culturally, so there's usually other incompatibilities that come with that musical difference in other cultural areas, like what movies they would like, them wanting to fish and camp, etc.. I can also be ok with dating someone who is moderately or mildly religious, as long as they can accept my Agnosticism, but that last part almost never happens on the part of women who are moderately religious, and with women who are strongly religious, it's almost always a dealbreaker on either their part or mine.

Not me, not me! Certainly limits the dating pool around here, not to even mention being an Atheist.

Yes. Sad to have to put it in the profile that it's about intelligence not politics. It used to be one party won, the other lost and you might not agree with their policies but they were qualified. I'd vote for Liz Cheney tomorrow and wouldn't agree with anything she did, but at least she has a brain in her head.

I still would never vote for Liz Cheney, because I don't agree with her at all on policies, but I do appreciate what she did regarding Jan.6, even if her motivations for that may be suspect or self-serving in the long run...

@TomMcGiverin okay, I give up, what would her suspect or self-serving motivations be? Losing her seat in Congress intentionally?

@lerlo Maybe you haven't heard the rumors, but she is likely planning a presidential run for 2024, as an independent candidate. I'm guessing that was her motivation for bucking Trump and the Repubs on the insurrection.

@TomMcGiverin well we know how independent runs for the presidency work in this country, not at all. I'm pretty sure based on what she's actually said ( that she's not done standing up to him) that she would run against him to try and make sure he doesn't become president again. Either way, rumors aside, I don't think she intended on losing her seat in Congress.

@lerlo One thing I do know is that she would have no chance running for the Repub nomination in two years. The party is so tied to Trump that I think the nomination is his if he actually can and does run. The party hates her for standing up to Trump and that is not going to change in two years or even much later than that. Unless Trump can't run, due to his legal troubles, or decides not to run, he will be the nominee, if not, we will get Cruz or DeSantis for their nominee...
