Science education sucks in OZ and I was once a teacher and a totally boring one. I don't know what it's like in the US.
I hate failing and hope to go back one day.
So what have I learnt? Well to be a teacher you have to be a good presenter and a salesperson (for science no for used cars or vacuum cleaners).
I attended many of those hard sell Personal Growth groups who use meetup.com to get an audience (the free introductory ones).
Didn't pay much attention to the content but their style. They were good. Wondering around using their hands (non-groping), and glancing at the audience. They involved people and they followed a set formula.
There's a lot we can learn from them - their presentation style. The content was bullshit and geared towards being financially successful by preaching to others their money making formulas but there's a lot we can learn from them.
Don't get sucked in. Take the good stuff. How to present your cause and be entertaining. That's what sells whether it be as a teacher or a date.

On a serious note in th UK there's a push towards S.T.E.M. - Science Technology Engineering Maths) They should have done it 30yr ago and we would have had the best Technicians in the world by now

Maybe the Wizard needs to teach science in OZ.
One thing I've learned in teaching and speaking to groups from 4 to 44 is that humor (or humour) goes a long way towards keeping information interesting and memorable. Most of the teaching I've done was in business, but I've found it's even harder to keep adults engaged than it is children. And it really doesn't matter what the subject is.
If you know someone you think has a good sense of humor, or is even just a little silly, it may help to ask them to listen to your material, or spiel, or speech, or whatever to get feedback or suggestions.

Geeze...i was a instructor in welding pipe. A instructor in repair of pumps and seals. Also proceedure writer in repair of equipment. All the people i instructed had a deep desire to learn to pass the national certification test. I don't know how to tell you to teach your students. Maybe you could have some hands on. They pay attention to a show.

G'day - from another Aussie (Hobart, ex Maleny) - somehow Science and Math needs to be made interesting to school kids. How about Science in Nature? or Math come to that. My smart arse brother keeps talking about Fibunacci (?) - trying to sound learned. As a kid I was so intimidated by Math I didn't attempt to pass. Passed once in 3 years of High School, because I learned a few things by heart.

I do not think science education will take off until we find a way of including science method within a personal search to find a problem you hopefully want to know the solution of. Most science in schools is repeating the science that other people have discovered. Good for techniques but not establishing the great tool that science can be I want to give kids their own personal 'Eureka' moment.
Hmmmm.... good to know some meetup.com groups are indeed used for such purposes. Have been looking at the offerings with the idea of meeting some people, but some looked suspicious, like "investment" groups, eastern mysticism and others that I suspected might be springboards for "for pay" counseling and advising.
