It still amazes me how much more the typical agnostic/atheist knows more about the Bible than a Christian. When I was a Christian I was completely ignorant to history and we were just told to believe and that anyone who says differently is just the devil tempting you. Since I’ve left the church I’ve studied the history and tried to gently get Christians to look at the facts. None of them are even open minded enough to consider the facts. They dig deeper in their own beliefs in spite of facts to the contrary
Not really that amazing; many people are indoctrinated at an early age. The lazy ones just continue to let someone else think for them - the curious ones start to dig and compare and discover all the holes. "Faith" is nothing more than the willingness to look the other way and ignore reality.
I once asked a 'believer' - when was the last time anyone saw "God", the answer was the burning bush - so, thinking about that I said; "if we are made in the image of God, how come we are bipedal and not tumbleweeds?" The real answer is: never, 'God' is a construct of men to manipulate the masses through 'faith'.
Note; I do believe there is an energy that surround us and if some tards want to call that God... fine, just keep it to yourself and out of politics.
Strict religious upbringing, in church several times a week, old school independent Methodist grade school etc will do that. The way to make the strongest atheist is to make a smart kid really study the bible in depth.
So true. They pick and choose the good parts and say every word of the Bible is 100% true and it’s funny to watch them do mental gymnastics trying to explain
The headmaster of my primary school told all his pupils that even questioning the existence of God would result in us being sent to Hell. It is dangerous evil liars like him that need to be silenced. If he was alive today I would spit in his face.
Using fear to gain compliance is a form of abuse.
@Betty Specifically, it's a form of abuse called coercion.
It's the same thing with MAGAt election deniers: facts, data, evidence, these things are beside the point.
It's the same thing as how so many foreigners who are well traveled and intelligent are actually much more informed and insightful about the US than all the native citizens here, who are instead ignorant and brainwashed about American exceptionalism and superiority. It is usually those outside a culture and a group that are the most objective, informed, and astute when it comes to seeing what's going on and and what the object group is really about.
This is why Theocracies immediately start destroying relics of historical significance. They tend to bolster the local stories which affected greater history and provide for doubt of the new story being beaten into people.
@rainmanjr Any kind of totalitarian society does that, including a supposedly communist one, like in Orwell's 1984, because the easiest way to control a population is by controlling history and information, rather than thru brute force all the time, thus, all totalitarian societies have their version of Orwell's memory hole in 1984.
You're quite close to the truth here, I believe. I was raised by "Christian" parents who only taught me the reasons not to believe in the worlds best selling fiction novel. I also don't believe in ghost stories. They put me through hell to try to enforce how important their beliefs were. I am intrigued and study biblical era history but I have yet to find any intrinsic evidence to prove anything the bible talks about.
