Maggie Barton’s love for All Souls Catholic School extended beyond the walls of her Englewood classroom.
The 32-year-old technology teacher coached All Souls’ basketball team, helped create the school yearbook, ran lights and sound for school assemblies and musicals, DJed school dances and — among her favorite activities — played guitar with the choir during Mass.
On Jan. 25, Barton said, she received a call from the All Souls Catholic School principal saying the Archdiocese of Denver had obtained a photo of Barton and another woman kissing. The Archdiocese, the principal told Barton, would be reaching out and Barton would be placed under paid leave pending “an investigation,” Elizabeth Hernandez reports.
She was in a loving relationship with a consenting adult. Meanwhile priests are molesting young boys who's safety the Archdiocese is responsible for, they do nothing. But they fire a teacher for her personal life, which they aren't responsible for.
That is definitely one of the big take-a-ways from this.
Perhaps the school did her a favor. Maybe this will be the start of questioning the (dis)organization she believes. Also, teachers at Catholic schools often earn only 75% of what teachers in public schools earn.
It is true that catholic schools do not pay well. And I know openly gay teachers who teach in public schools without harassment . However, I think if I were gay, even in this day in age, I would try like heck not to be open about it. I have developed a deep mistrust of people in general.
Xians and gays are like pickles and milk -- they just don't go together.
What? I just ate a pickle sandwich and washed it down with milk.
Pretty stupid to get rid of a good teacher just because of their sexual orientation.
Reasonable people know that.
