"500,000 electric charging stations"...NO, NO,NO, NO! Haven't you heard today's news about lithium-Ion batteries Mr. President?
Comments
David Fishel
Stop electric cars before it's too late. It's the biggest techno-blunder in history. Cobalt mines in Congo worked by slaves creating toxic devastation to make lithium batteries in new electric cars that explode into un-quenchable fires on the very trucks transporting them to the dealers. Lithium batteries are a timebomb! "Lithium-Ion Batteries in E-Bikes and Other Devices Pose Fire Risks
The batteries, also found in phones, laptops, SOLAR HEATING SYSTEMS, toothbrushes and other items, have caused about 200 fires and six deaths in New York City this year, fire officials say. Here’s what to know about safety.".... (from article in N.Y.T.)

We must approach this challenge with a scientific mindset (science the shit out of it). However, it's important to acknowledge that everyone has biases and may overstate the advantages and downplay the drawbacks of various solutions.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s serves as a cautionary tale. The USSR found the largest lithium reserve in the world during a geological survey and invaded, ultimately contributing to its own downfall. The US also invaded Afghanistan in search of lithium, as evidenced by President Bush's willingness to invade for any reason and the war is directly connected to the 2008 economic collapse. Childhood lead exposure from leaded gasoline, which was used from the 1920s until 1996, has reduced the IQ of 170 million US adults by an estimated 824 million points, according to a study. This may have contributed to the US's recent political choices, like Trump and the party of stupid people.

Three alternative solutions to lithium-ion batteries are:

Sodium-ion batteries - This emerging technology offers cost-effective, safe, sustainable and high-performance solutions. Sodium-ion batteries use widely available and inexpensive materials and can be produced using existing lithium-ion production methods.

Solid-state batteries - The development of large-scale solid-state batteries for electric vehicles is a crucial challenge in the industry. Solid-state batteries have the potential to greatly surpass the performance, safety, and processing limitations of lithium-ion batteries, making them an exciting long-term prospect with high potential rewards.

Lithium-sulfur batteries - These batteries offer cost and weight advantages, as well as safety benefits. Initially used in niche markets like satellites, drones and military vehicles, lithium-sulfur technology has the potential to revolutionize aviation, making electric aircraft and flying taxis a reality by 2050.

Many other alternatives are being considered, such as aluminum batteries and gravity batteries. It's important to keep in mind that while there may be some setbacks, we are unlikely to abandon technology as it would result in widespread suffering and death. We cannot return to a pre-technological existence as some may romanticize, and must continue to find solutions that allow us to live sustainably with technology.

You say these alternatives have potential but that is a relative judgement. What you say is very interesting but should we be encouraged that any of them are imminently viable? Many people hold high hopes for "Fusion" energy but everything I have read leaves me skeptical that it will ever emerge as the "miracle" it promises to be.

@fishline79 It's ok, relax, people smarter then you are working on it as we speak.

@Willow_Wisp Yeah, like Oppenheimer, and the guy who invented plastic.

@fishline79 If you are not satisfied with the outcome of certain events, it's important to educate yourself to be able to identify and solve problems. Keep in mind that sometimes, even well-intentioned solutions can have unintended consequences. It is often said that the path to a difficult situation is often paved with good intentions. Criticism is easy, but it's not impressive if it's not backed by action. Speaking truth to those in power takes courage, but complaining without doing anything constructive is not effective. Refusing to embrace technology simply because of a negative attitude or limited perspective is not productive.

@Willow_Wisp I'll embrace the technology when it is proven to be safe. Anyway, electric cars have to get energy to charge the "timebombs". Where does that come from? They don't save energy or the environment. And who needs electric "hoverboards"?

@fishline79 I guess we should get rid of pencils, since some kid stabbed another with one. You sound like a standard issue radical Luddite.

@Willow_Wisp: I am a bit of a Luddite. I am against changing or eliminating a good, proven technology with a bad one just because it's about time. And your pencil analogy sounds like NRA logic. I'll bet you are an NRA supporter. I think they are a subversive, insurrectionist organization and should be regulated.

@fishline79 Boy do you have the wrong image of me. I am for not selling guns to anyone without a through background check. I owned one, once, despite being an expert marksman in the Navy, I returned it 3 days after buying it because is was a crappy gun. I have no need of them anyway, and neither do most people. So no, I have no use for the NRA, and I'm in favor of New York shutting them entirely down. I am also an engineer and I am educated enough to know that we don't have the resources to maintain our population without technology. Like it or not, it's either more technology that's better designed or possible extinction if we try to go back to the land. In fact if we shut down all carbon usage right now we would still keep warming for a couple of years due to the lack of aerosol sulfates, so even more wildfires unless we inject aerosol sulfates but the scale is troubling.
No problem we have gets easier by being less informed. A dictator could make us all go agrarian and we would all die of unregulated climate temperature spike, and it gets worse every year we stay addicted to carbon fuels.

@Willow_Wisp Sorry, but I've heard that type of analogy so many times from rednecks, always rationalizing gun violence. And while we're on the subject of cliches, have a nice day. By the way, Nan Golden should look as good as you do in your bio photo at your age.

@fishline79 You can’t gaslight my education into redneck stupidity. Ignorant retard. The bio pic is AI art. I work with AI a lot. Mostly in industrial controls. I have actual photos too pre wide spread AI availability.

@Willow_Just joking. What would you expect from an ignorant "Special Needs"? Do you think A.I. knows more about what you look like? The technology industry thinks they will put artists out of business. There are already law suits pending. The Luddite in me abhors the trend by arrogant tech wizards who think they can replace humans entirely, even artistic creativity.

  1. Are Graphene Batteries the Future?

[azonano.com].

I don't know. What are they?

@fishline79 the next step in battery tech.

Oh, Jesus! Now I am afraid that my toothbrush is going to explode. I could also end up with a gas tank full of fumes and almost empty and a spark from my submerged electric fuel pump would blow me sky high. We cannot win.

2

More people are killed by internal combustion engines than battery fires.
Sounds like electric cars are safer.

So you're saying that the engines explode? Your statement hardly qualifies as "scientific proof".

@fishline79
I didn't say that, did I? Can't you read?

@AtheistInNC I said that because, that's what Lithium batteries do! Of course you didn't say that, but my comment is analogous to yours, and because you need to your justify your assertion. I stand by my comment. Besides, we have had internal combustion engines for 140 years, and Lithium batteries for 20.

@fishline79
Many of the failures that occur with lithium batteries are due to misuse (overcharging, using the wrong type of charger, piercing the battery, etc.). If we factor in all the times people get burned due to using gasoline to ignite back yard fires, gasoline is WAAAY more dangerous per capita than lithium batteries.

"Fortunately, when you consider how many lithium-ion batteries there are in the world today, battery fires are pretty rare.

It’s been estimated to be about one in 12 million. So that’s quite favorable,” said Boyce. “There’s a couple of caveats on that, though. As we see four to six to eight billion [lithium-ion battery] cells going out each year, that one in 12 million, that starts to get up there.”

Also, research is creating batteries not based on lithium:

So this mountain-from-molehill mentality will cause EVs to be safer in the long run.
We don't need to stop EVs ... we need to educate those who have an opinion instead of education.

In order to become green?

They are creating an overtly browning carbon footprint that will only grow exponentially as they poison the planet in the name of profit!!!

I've been saying this for a long time. This is what the proponents don't say. It's almost the same conundrum we have with nuclear energy. I live in Harrisburg, PA and the "dirty water" which was originally supposed to by shipped out to Nevada and stored in a special underground depository (since abandoned) is still languishing on site, in the middle of the Susquehanna River. The French put theirs in drums and drop them into the ocean !

My take is, that after a century of development, ICE technology is at or near
its peak and improvements will be incremental from here on out.
EV's have actually been around just as long, but the technologies
needed for its advancement have been long suppressed.
See 'Who Killed the Electric Car' to gain some insight.
Now, development of EV's will be more on the time scale
of personal computers and cell phones. In a decade from now,
there will be technologies at hand that we can not envision today.
All major auto manufactures are well into the development of EV's.
Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, BMW, VW, Porche, are all falling in line with Tesla.
The competition will encourage rapid development.
For many people, a plug in hybrid is the best option today.
But soon, the advantages of EV's will be peerless.

Dream on. Yesterday's "E.V". technology and today's are two different birds. It is a big mistake putting our energy future in stored elctricity. That isn't the answer, Mr. Musk.

3

Here’s something to show your concerns will not be all that bad. The evolution of battery technology will take care of those problems.

@Dhiltong I'll never buy a plug-in EV. The dealer's lots will be full of those things. There's not enough yuppies to go around.

@barjoe Well, ICE vehicles will still be around as long as you’re going to be alive so why worry about it.

Thanks for the video, much of it over my head,
but interesting none the less.

Hahaha

@Dhiltong Exactly!

Not to mention Elon Musk is a steaming pile of 💩

Yes, yes he is. Most of "his" technology was proposed when I was a kid. He just hired all the smart people that never got funding then took credit for their work.
If I have to hear another conservative Elon worshiper talk about how this guy is an Engineer, Scientist, rouge genius... no he's none of these things.
He's buying an undeserved reputation and actual SMART people need to be funded, his accomplishments are ALL leveraged from his privilege, had he been from any other race would we even know his damnable name?

@Willow_Wisp He is showing himself to be little bit of a phony. Tesla’s domination of the EV market is about to come to an end with all the major car makers coming out with some very innovative EV’s. That plus the Twitter debacle, his stock is definitely going down.

Elon is not the only one creating EV's, even Winnebago is making one, not to mention Kia, Chevy, Ford, etcetcetc...do not make the mistake of confusing Musk with actual technology!

@AnneWimsey I don't want one no matter who makes them. Just saying.
