This is the world of republicans and so called ‘loving’ Christians (and many other religions). Can’t imagine having been put in a situation like this.
*"To the Editor:

"The recent tragic event at the Daytona Beach Advent Health hospital where a wife killed her terminally ill husband per his request, is an example of the drastic measures a person will take when they feel that there are no other options. Individuals in this difficult situation want to choose an end-of-life choice in accordance with their own values and beliefs. Hospice, palliative care and voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED) are legal options."
"I’m writing on behalf of my mother, who suffered terribly the last few weeks of her life, everyday asking to just let her die. It was agonizing to watch someone suffer so terribly, even with the best pain-relieving medications available to her. Hospice care works great for those it works great for, but not for everyone. No one should have to beg for death.
Medical aid in dying (MAiD) is legal in 10 states and Washington, D.C., but not Florida, which has the second-highest number of aging citizens. The nonprofit Florida Death with Dignity has proposed MAiD legislation for mentally competent adults with a terminal illness who have less than 6 months to live, to request a prescription for medication which they self-ingest without assistance, to end their life in a peaceful manner. I wonder if this couple would have resorted to using a gun if MAiD was already legal in Florida?
I ask those that support the right to live your life on your own terms and those that support the right to make your own health-care decisions to also support the rights of an individual with a terminal illness to make their own choice."

Oklahoma will never allow it so I plan on stock piling strong pain pills to take on my own when I think the time is right. That reminds me I need to do some research about how many it would take.

There is a book out titled 'Final Exit' (I have a copy) that outlines easy and less painful ways of relieving one's painful existence. An aunt of mine (she was 89) was suffering from extreme depression and was put in a home. She simply stopped eating. It is supposed to be hard at first but then it get very easy. Better get it now before some republican bans it from the stores.

The reason it is not yet legal in many places is because caring for the elderly and the dying is highly lucrative! Letting people opt out vs milking them and their families of as much money as possible is the American way. And it's not just Florida!

Here's a letter I wrote that got printed in all three of our papers. [sanjuanjournal.com] Note the NPR link at the end. This addresses your comment.

Simply because it and one other states are considering implementing the program. Whenever, a possible new state comes along I post it. ALso, it is illegal in Arizona but I have been told (by 2 doctors in our endoflifewas program) that the state seldome prosecutes and just looks the other way.

According to your post 10 States and D.C. allow MAiD. That means 40 States do not, therefore it is illegal in those States.

Why do you single out Florida?

Florida is really easy to hate.
Especially with DeathSantis and all now.

I thought the author mentioned that Florida was singled out because of its extra large population of elderly people since it is a retirement destination for many.

@BufftonBeotch The vast majority of Florida voters reelected him. Why do you hate Democracy?

@Lorajay Perhaps.

By the time my niece, my niece who was vibrant and funny and a gift to humanity of all time.
My niece who became my niece when she marched into a wedding of Hell's Bells.
To marry my nephew. Just 10 years younger than me.
And I had introduced him to not only Citizen Kane but also The People Under the Stairs.
But she was not allowed that cocktail until she was unable to physically do it.

On Edit - She would have had to have have been physically able to hold the cup herself and swallow.

Unfortunately there is a bureaucracy and rules. The biggest concern was that someone would use the program to bump off a rich family member. Also, there had to be a big debate on the word 'suicide.' With many groups suicide is a negative word (like churches and insurance companies). So one had to be able to put the method of death as that which one was suffering and would have resulted in death. That, often meant sound in mind and some bodily abilities.

Was Kate’s mother forced to stay in hospice care? Was Kate asking for someone other than herself or her mother to end her mother’s life? There’s not enough information to be certain. But at what point did her Kate and her mother lose the ability to go home and deal with end of life on their own terms?

Even so, it’s a problem because we separate ourselves from old people and send them away to be cared for. We shy away from death instead of embracing it as a natural part of life.

My sympathies for Kate and her mother. Hopefully Kate can use the experience to prepare for her own demise.

Unfortunately, not in Florida or Texass. Often there's a financial issue. People have little choice in conservative states. There suffering is the price one needs to pay to meet Jesus. In the more civilized states (as along the west coast (including Hawaii) Canada and several other states we have the Death with Dignity program. My late partner signed up for this and was actually excited to be able to control her own death.

After the cancer progressed and further treatment was no longer an option my wife and I opted for hospice care. I say opted because at any time I could have taken her home to die there instead of at the hospital. That was in Texas. My question, “Was Kate’s mother forced to stay in hospice care?” Is that choice not available in Florida?

I absolutely support a person's right to choose the manner and time of their own death.

That's what my gun is for but, if I have time, my other plan is to become a resident of OR. I gather it takes little time and they have assisted death. Everything dies so I don't understand what the big problem is for humans about this (other than god whom should never enter into a public concern as existence is undemonstrated).

Unfortunately the gods do enter. The issue is total hypocrisy (and what isn't with theses people). They say taking one's life in their own hands is playing God and immoral. BUT they go to any length to preserve their own life (do we see a bit of doubt here). I have said 'These people can't wait to meet jesus, but not just yet.

@jackjr God only enters the legal debate because we allow Thou to enter it. The people could stop such entrances but they haven't the time or commitment so we get corruption of law.
