You want to know how much I hate airlines and airports?

I'm renting a car to drive to Memphis because I would have a layover in ATL.

Bonus - I have a car to drive in Memphis.

On edit - From coastal SC. About 11 hours. I see an airplane flight being at least that long.

I hate flying too, especially for cylcing trips Meeting friends in CO for a MTB trip this summer. They are flying. I'm driving. Save $200 in shipping the bike which should cover gas and I don't have to worry about my bike getting mishandled.

I have never been on a plane and don't want to either.

Not the planes. It's the airports.

@BufftonBeotchI wouldn't like the airports but flying or the thought of it scares the crap out of me.

I have always hated flying, and it is going to take a lot to get me back on a plane. Last year, my husband and I were flying from Ft. Lauderdale to Atlanta and we hit very bad weather. Things were flying all over the plane, things fell out of the overhead bins, and more than half of the plane was vomiting. We had an emergency landing in Birmingham Alabama. They cleaned up the plane, restocked the barf bags, and waited for the weather to clear. We then flew into Atlanta and my husband and I were told that we missed our connecting flight, and that we had 10 minutes to get from Terminal A to Terminal T. We ran with luggage in tow, and made it with about 1 minute to spare. We were able to get the last 2 seats on the last flight back home.I told my husband that he was lucky that I actually got back on a plane. It took us 23 hours to get from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Louis that day. We could have driven and been home several hours earlier. It is going to take a lot of convincing to get me back on one.

Weather can be awful, and obviously out of their control, but they really should have compensated people for the experience of the delay. ATL was you intended destination then?

I'm with you, what you just wrote reinforced why I won't fly.

@BufftonBeotch yes, Atlanta to St Louis was our intended destination. I guess landing in Alabama was a bonus.

And I'm not sure I'll ever want a window seat again.

I fly about once a year since it takes about 2 and half days to visit my folks.THe last time I was in an airport I think I would have preferred to be in an old Greyhound bus station

hey are dingy but more humane.

If it is a reasonable drive (12 hours or so) I would much rather drive than fly.

Looks like a click or two under 10 to Memphis from here.

I intend to take it a an easy pace.

After ATL anyway.

Savannah to Macon to ATL is a pretty grim drive.

I flew so much during my military days but since ETSing (getting out) I've grown phobic of flying. My family lives in Va and not too long ago one of my wife's sisters died who lived in OK. We drove the whole way there and back with all our kids.

I fear putting my life in anyone else hands... Even though I know the chances of dying in a plane crash is far less than driving a vehicle. Irrational, I know, but phobias often are.

I just hate flying, and do those kind of long drives instead. I've driven from Asheville to Boston and back several times. I also dislike the interstate highways, so I'll even take my time, use secondary roads, and go through every little town in between. There is usually very little traffic, and it reminds me of what it must have been like before the interstates were built.

Safe travels.

i'm doing Interstates. I even need to go through ATL Planning on getting through there before rush hour.

@BufftonBeotch Great idea.
