As difficult as it is to find on THIS planet I'm beginning to have my doubts. The likelihood that our blip of cosmic existence would coincide with another species of like intelligence regardless of physical distance is beyond astronomical. Yet I still watch the skies with more hope than I have while overlooking a crowd of people...

Looking at how many solar systems are in our galaxy alone, I would say it is impossible for there not to be.

The question is, is there intelligent life on this planet?

I only know it is sorely lacking on the planet we now call Earth.

If there is,it’s probably a life form that does not fit the description of what we would recognize as life as we know it . And hopefully it is not to intelligent for its own good ,because if it possess to much intelligence it may eventually destroy itself and the planet it inhabits. LIKE US.

It would be an awful waste of space if there wasn't.

Lately, I've been asking myself if there's intelligent life on THIS planet !

That’s a good one

I've been wondering about that for as long as I can remember! My thought is the way we are going we won't be around long enough to become intelligent!

It is possible, but don't make the mistake of equating intelligence with technology capable. The list runs something like this:

Microbial life is a realistic certainty with the right conditions.

Advance lifeforms is a strong possibility with the right conditions

Intelligent, self aware lifeforms are a possibility with the right conditions

Intelligence with the capacity to develop technology is probably quite rare

Intelligence that has become minimally spacefaring is probably extremely rare

Intelligence capable of traveling interstellar, not likely at all at this time

We must also allow for the possibility that we might be the only intelligent life in our immediate neighborhood out to a radius of 100 light years. That, to me, would be disappointing -- but it is a possibility.

However, take heart because Frank and Sullivan have modified the Drake Equation to take into account current findings:

[technologyreview.com]

I have to ask your assumptions about the age and size of the universe and the number of galaxies being considered. New exoplanets meeting the criteria for potentially supporting life are identified almost daily and most of us can't comprehend begin to comprehend the number of stars there are. There could be civilizations that evolved for millions of years
before becoming extinct.

It is hard to imagine that we are the only intelligent form of life in this vast universe at this point in time. Numerically, intellectually and scientifically I believe there's something else out there somewhere.

@SoloSentient - Read the article and you will know what my assumptions are. The list is based upon Frank and Sullivan's new work. The idea that we may be the only technology capable life in our neighborhood is quite realistic and is base upon what has been found to date. The important words are 'possibility', 'possible', 'likely', and 'likelihood'. It should also be apparent that a 100 light year radius is but a speck in our galaxy and our galaxy is but a speck in our local group. Carrying that forward, our local group hardly registers when related to the entire known Universe. Until we are able to get spectra from the atmospheres of candidate exoplanets (something that is likely to happen soon), we won't know if any of those found so far could harbor life at all.

In the meantime, I remain hopeful that we find the signature we're looking for -- perhaps get some verifiable signals, but for the moment, we don't know.

I think there probably is.
There are a whole lot of other planets out there for life to have a chance to take hold.
It happened here, why not somewhere else too?

I wish there was a planet where there were no weak delusional people who rely on an afterlife, rather than this life to "see" or "be with" their dead loved ones. So actual intelligent people. My fantasy planet has no religious people but smart people who see their life for what they make it, who don't depend on an imaginary "friend" who they talk to, thank for anything and everything bla bla...

I can almost guarentee not in our solar system. But in others absolutely

4

Probably.

To think that Earth is the only planet with life on it is vain and arrogant. We've been conditioned to think we're unique and in uniqueness is 'right'ness.

7

With the number of planets estimated to be out there, it's almost a sure thing. Will we find them, or will they find us? I doubt that will ever happen. I don't think we, or anyone else, will ever master space travel at speeds that will make it possible. Hell, I'm not even sure we can land people on Mars and return them safely to Earth.

Hey brother! I'm right there with you.

I agree with you on all that. But I think the best of our humanity can manage a trip to Mars soon.

Why go to mars? We're suppose to carry on humanity on a planet like that? I just wish things can be taken care of here.

There probably is and they are so advanced in technology they would view our world as primitive.

Yeah and they don't have to abduct us and give us rectal probes...they do it with some other technology that let's 'em stay hidden in the vastness of the cosmos. Little green men....geez...

When I see Trump supporters I wonder if there is intelligent life on this planet.

so true!

4

Heck Yeah! Why not? If their powerful enough to reach us. We're in big trouble.

Stephen Hawking thinks along those lines.I think there is intelligent life elsewhere. I am not sure I would want to be the one to try initial contact with them
