It has always been a possibility that SARS CoV-2 "may have" originated in a lab. This is not news. That a Chinese scientist admits this possibility publicly I guess can be taken for some sort of progress, but it's the kind of story you're going to find at the bottom of page 13...between reports of a dog bite and a dumpster fire. Not exactly Earth-shaking.

A new Covid visual started in a city with a Covid laboratory and it was purely coincidental I’m sure.

If this story is true what have you gained? Maybe another reason to vilify China. In 1918 the Spanish Flu was said later to have come from Kansas City. Did it mean Kansas was trying to take over the world?

Animal to human viruses are most often transmitted though direct contact of some kind. There was a story I heard on NPR of a bat virus which has a kill rate of 70%. And that is staggering. Luckily the village where it happened is very isolated.

Turns out there are trees there which ooze a very sweet sap at certain times of the year. The same trees in which bats sleep and do what mammals do and...gravity. So when people stuck their fingers in the natural goodness for a treat, they also might be getting a dose of guano.

No one really doubted that it "could have." My problems with the theory was just that some from the right wing asserted that it was deliberate. (What benefit would there be to release a virus on their own population?)
Of course, the racists also found a way to go apoplectic about another culture's dietary choices.

Who specifically said it was deliberate?

@Alienbeing Dumpety implied it and many of the shrieking, shit-stirrers in the right wing media said it outright.

@BufftonBeotch That was not a specific answer. It appears you are merely noting something someone might have said, and you give no context.

@Alienbeing Here. First thing that popped on Google.
Do not imply that I am incompetent, deluded or trying to intentionally deceive anyone.

People like this were all over right wing media. The verbal and physical attacks on anyone looking Asian were well documented.

@BufftonBeotch He's baaaack! And true to form, still a nit-picking, confrontational, and generally unpleasant being. 😂

@Flyingsaucesir He ever left? He has always been clinging to me like a cheap shower curtain.

@Flyingsaucesir There is a big difference between nit picking and fact checking.

Much of what you post requires fact checking.

@Flyingsaucesir Had you cited the article to begin with no fact check would have been necessary.

'May have'

Sometimes 'may have' means it happened. Sometimes 'may have' means it didn't.

Donald Trump 'may have' incited the January 6th Capitol riots. NASA 'may have' faked Neil Armstrong's moon landing.

We don't know. Maybe we will know, some time in the future, but for now we don't - and this 'Top Chinese Scientist's' comments don't yet change that.

well now it's raining on my parade!

"may have" = it did.

@Alienbeing 🤡

@Alienbeing

No. 'May have' is a term of deniability. A means of saying something, while always having the option of claiming you never said it.

If it did, you say 'it did'. The fact that you are refusing to say 'it did' indicates that your statement is not one you're prepared to stake your reputation on. You, yourself, are unsure and want an escape clause.

We saw Trump incite the MAGA mob to attack the Capitol with our own eyes, on national TV. The J6 Select Committee filled in the gaps, and dispelled any lingering doubts. Trump DID incite the J6 insurrection.

@ToakReon It did, they just won't admit it.
