Actually, "inns" as we know them did not exist in Israel in the time of J's supposed birth. Animals were most often "stabled" in rooms below living quarters if a house were two stories. Not only did it make it harder for animals to be stolen, but the heat of their bodies rose to the upper rooms. Livestock were also kept inside the house proper. (Later, bedrooms in castles were often right over the stables to take advantage of the rising heat.)
