Mormons call it "Lying for the Lord" and it is an accepted missionary tool
Just another version of "The end justifies the means"
@Gwendolyn2018
You are welcome, I was unaware of it too until I was called as a stake missionary, a calling that was no small contributor to my eventual apostasy.
@Buttercup - I understand your wonderful "presenting the bible as the literal word of god "worshiping a graven image" and claiming yourself as it's interpreter "bearing false witness"."
IMO Watts's statement is pretentious nonsense!
The "anybody" is overstatement, as were many of Jesus' s teachings. But if one substitutes " be wary that those who claim... don't pick your pocket....", then it's a pretty clever statement IMO.
As is putting up the 10 commandments all over worshipping a graven image, but they'll never accept that.
It is. Jesus and God was/is used by those in power for purposes that aren't good for anyone but them. Jesus is real. Christ consciousness is real. Some of the bible is real. Religion is like spirituality level 1. I'd call atheism level 2 because with atheism you've seen the bs and recognize it.
BTW Alan Watts was very critical of Christianity but he was also very spiritual. I enjoy listening to him.
I'd be interested to know if he called himself spiritual.
The word means myriad things to different people. From this quote, he eschews it.
@CallMeDave He called himself Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu so yeah. The quote says nothing to eschew religion. Your interpretation of his quote does.
