What I think about people telling old women to cut their hair:
Not everyone has the genetics to grow extremely long hair. Mine is about 14 inches & then falls out. I am too cheap to spend money on hair styles. Now that I am a recluse I don't have men accosting me verbally on the street when I let my hair grow. When I worked in public I kept it boyishly short to avert men's unwanted attention from passing trucks or on construction sites.
Well, dang, my earlier comment to you disappeared!
I have long hair genes--they skipped two generations and came to me. I wrote more, but I don't remember what I said.
I'm too cheap to get my hair cut in a salon anymore. I just put my hair in a pony tail and whack off a couple of inches with the scissors now and then.
Thanks for posting this, Gwen. I find common sense and knowledge here and have also been able to hear your voice. Grow your hair anyway that you want it to be. After all, it is your hair. You look good too. I'm beginning to grow a beard in my own hair color. A couple of women told me to do this and it never dawned on me that they wanted to see less of my face. As I age it is nice to not shave and cut the hell out of myself. As for marriage and relationships I'm seeing it your way and not wanting this again. The company is nice but I find that I have also become a recluse.
My earlier reply to you vanished!
I cannot truly imagine living with someone after living alone for 17 years. I wrote more, but the words are lost in space.
Same advice goes to men too - grow a beard if you want - nobody should tell you not to. I've heard women scathingly tell men they are ugly with a beard. Well, beards are natural on men, so cutting them is a preference. I think men, like women, should wear their hair, facial or otherwise, anyway they like, regardless of opinions of judgmental people.
Yep, people should wear their hair however they want. Period.
My experiences are similar to yours, with the length of my hair and years not all that much shorter than yours.
Though the only person to ever tell me I should cut my hair was my sister, and I think it had a bit more to do with jealousy than any other reason.
For the most part, I keep my hair up when at home or work, but at night, when I go out, I do let my hair down. Even though my hair is thin and straight, I don't really care what anyone thinks of it. Anyone commenting on it is usually complimentary, like it's some achievement to grow hair. Nope! It would be more of an achievement to spend an hour styling my hair, but I'm a wash and go girl, with very little in the way of care and products. I do have a lot of hair clips though to keep my hair out of the wind and water.
I know that my sister was jealous of my hair!
I have had mine very short at times, but it grows so fast, it needed a trim every three weeks to keep the shape. I had to style it, as well. Now, it's wash and go.
How exquisitely evocative and exotic, ecdysiasts take note.
One sensual question: do you think the audio sounds like you?
This did not apply in my younger days when "everyone" had long hair in high school and college. Now that I am old, I am going against the cultural standards set for old women!
I am not giving into the fear of not fitting in but haven't for years.
I think it is amusing that while YouTube videos promote the issue of NO long hair for old women, I get nothing but compliments on mine. Men, little girls (never little boys) and women of all ages compliment me.
Of course, I can't take credit--it's in the genes. I do take care of my hair, though.
My earlier addendum disappeared! Yes, I think the video represents my voice in "real" life.
