I am distressed by the American media's obsession with the "royal wedding." There are so many important things going on, this bit of pop culture seems like it should be insignificant.
The media is like that. It's what pays their wages.
Consider the inappropriate amount of coverage whenever a pop idol gets married or dies. Days and days of it, to the detriment of "real" news.
In the UK the only thing that can "top" it in coverage is a bad result in a cricket match. The declaration of World War Three is relegated to "Oh, by the way" status.
“to the detriment of "real" news.” sums it up for me..
For me, it’s a nice diversion from politics, people shooting kids and other ills of society.
People might not see the wedding between a white royal and a biracial, divorced, American woman as important if they are privileged whites.
But for the black and biracial community..long marginalized, this was a watershed moment. Two young people who are both passionate about their charity work around the world, who are famous in their own rights, now giving hope to people who have never seen themselves represented in the royal family.
I loved the black choir, the black cellist, whose incredible playing made me cry, and a black preacher from a different church denomination than the official royal Church of England, even though the preaching was my least favorite part, since I don't believe in it. The black choir even sang a black 1960s soul song..wonderful!
It was amazing..even Meghan's veil celebrated each country in the Commonwealth.
The royal family paid for the wedding, Meghan paid for the honeymoon, and the only cost to British taxpayers was the cost of security for the event. The thousands of tourists pouring in for the event boosted the British economy.
I am sick of bad news, so this was WONDERFUL.
I totally agree with the importance of the racial component of the marriage. It is a true step in the right direction. The coverage I saw was not concentrating on that though. It was about Ms. Markel's dress and what celebrities were there and Elton John playing at the reception. If they were talking about racial equality, I'd want to listen. I may be a member of a privileged class (white men), but I freely admit it and try to compensate.
I didn't watch it, but it's a wonderful match-up!
It's significant english history.
Kind of "Game of Thrones" Lite.
Well, it's certainly not anything I'd be interested in watching, but the key is in the word you chose for you comment... MEDIA and not "news". It's media: 1 : a medium of cultivation, conveyance, or expression. They take whatever comes along that people may want to watch and they run it. The wedding will be a huge hit for them and it's cheap to produce. After that, back to Trump.
It's no difference than the media's obsession with every bit of pop culture... it's not worth getting distressed over anymore than it would be worth getting stressed over media coverage of the Oscars or Dancing With The Stars or every issue of People, US Weekly, or Glamour.
