Quote from Epicurus: Is God willing to prevent evil but not able? no, then he is not omnipotent. Is God able but not willing to prevent evil.no?Then he is malevolent. Is God both willing and able? Then why is there evil?

what gods ??

That is why I have a hard time with the concept of god. How could a god decide who to save and not to save? The Holocaust convinced me there is no god.

"If God is all powerful, he cannot be all good. And if he is all good, then he can't be all powerful." Lex Luthor from Batman v Superman.

When my brain fog cleared and I started to really question the Bible, this jumped out at me. I think of children with cancer, what the hell did they ever do to deserve that suffering. Or children being hurt in any way. Children starving, even here in the good old USA. If god could prevent that but doesn't then he is just a misogynist bastard and I want nothing to do with him.

Evil is perpetually mutable. It is based on cultural mores and norms. Now, let' just assume that by 'evil' they mean 'negative feeling actions'. Well, what happens if you eliminate all 'negative feeling actions'? You eliminate 'all feeling actions'. Can't have the good without the bad. The bad is a gift too. And 'evil' is supposed to be a choice in most religions, right? Only way to explain free will. Now, let's hit on the silliest one of all. Sickness. Why doesn't a deity stop sickness. Well, without sickness, we would all die. Devour all of our resources and die of dehydration quickly. So sickness is a gift. It get's more complicated when you talk about crippling non-lethal diseases, but those can have positive effects as well.

Key fallacies in Christianity and Judaism.

Yeah, and most of the Christians I know, believe that god is all powerful, all good, all knowing and he is everywhere at once, but he refuses to stop a child rapist. Something does not compute.

I am with Frank Zappa when he sang god is evil and just a little bit sick.

2

I'd love to find that in the original Greek. The formulation you have here is a slight modernization of Hume's translation.

Add in. If god is neither willing or able, why call him god. 😉
